Good day to start from SJPdP?

can anyone tell me if there is an ‘ideal’ or a better day to aim for beginning our Camino from SJPdP? We are starting at the beginning of May and ideally would get away before the bank holiday weekend but that’s not fixed in stone . Thank you

Avoid starting on any weekend is my tip. There is always a wave of people who start then and waiting a few days makes it easier the whole way.

I will leave home on May 11/18 with a target start date of May 13/18, Mother's Day in North America and a majority of countries around the World.

Because this is not a normal day for most to travel, except to where their Mother lives, it should be a quiet day to start the Camino, in my own estimation. Also, as it is a Sunday, the last day of the weekend, few should start then rather than lose the Friday / Saturday, depending on personal schedules.

I always try not to be in Saint Jean on a weekend or holiday. Same goes for Santiago.

I don't know if starting in SJPDP on a weekday or a weekend is any better. With that being said, I would plan out your start by not arriving in Pamplona on a Friday or Saturday evening. People in Pamplona tend to party into the wee hours of the morning. Unless that is your sort of thing.

My observation, which is in no way statistically valid, is that the largest number of people starting in any particular month will start on the first day of the month.

I'm not speaking from experience here but my guess would be that starting on Monday or Tuesday would be best because then you should be past Pamplona, another camino start point, before the weekend.

We always avoid the 1st of every month especially Sept 1 as it seems everyone likes to start then.

Wednesday was a good day for Team Sailor (my wife and me) to start moving west, but the problem is that we arrived Pamplona on a Saturday, and had a reservation at Casa Ibarrola, I was not aware that this place is right in the middle of the action and there is a busy street behind the albergue too (the back door is used to get the bikes in the albergue, don't take one of the bunks near the back door like I did), it was a long sleepless night in Pamplona and then the wet and foggy Alto del Perdon was waiting for me early in the morning! Buena suerte, y que la luz de Dios alumbre su camino.

I left SJDP on Saturday 6th May last year. SJDP was not at all full and there were not many pilgrims on the way to Orrison where I had pre-booked a bed for the night. The journey to Roncesvalles was again quite lightly populated with pilgrims - I had not booked ahead for a bed at Roncesvalles but there were beds available. I arrived in Pamplona on Tuesday 9th.
