Fire near Leon

Time of past OR future Camino
Sept,26 2017
Hi , we are in columbriano about to go to sleep but I could smell smoke earlier and have learned there is a fire raging on the other side of the mountain . We could see the smoke and see a glow. Should we be worried ? Does anybody know anything?

The TV and internet news said 80 fires were set on purpose in the last day or two in Galicia, if my limited Spanish is accurate. The smoke and smell in Galicia was actually kind of bad.

I'm sorry I don't have better geography. Can't recall exactly where places are. For example, where are you?

I'm glad you posted though. I was wondering how camino breathing is affected.

I think rain is forecast soon, so that should help.

Thank you , I'm praying it dies down tonight.

As far as I know there is no wild fire in that area. Most likely what you have smelled is just a wooden fire at home ;-) BC SY

We're in Fonfria tonight (Galicia) and came out of the albergue dinner to see flames in the field across the road. A smallish fire as these things go - a few trees alight by the looks (hard to tell in the dark). A little scary cause it's very windy and the wind is blowing towards the albergue. Locals seem to have got into action with tractors etc and put out the fire, and a water tanker (I think) has been helping. Hopefully they will keep an eye on it overnight - still very windy and thunderstorms are forecast. Not feeling like I'll get too much sleep....

Update. Two deaths have been reported. The wind has recently intensified and smoke is increasing.

People in albergues and hostels need to shut windows to keep the smoke out.

I just shut a bunch of windows where I'm staying, as the halls were getting smoky.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
I am in Portomarin (October 15) and the smoke is heavy across the river in the hills. I do not see flames but very heavy smoke in the entire sky around here tonight.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Holoholo automatically captures your footpaths, places, photos, and journals.
Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
In Palas de Rei (October 16) and things are much better as far as smoke goes as compared to last night in Portomarin.

Would you please identify your whereabouts in order to give an idea of problem arreas and not upset pilgrims walking safe trails.
