Gronze cites 2 different routes, one going north thru Golinhac and the other a southern route thru Compuac. There nwas some information that the southern route was along a ridge and 2 K shorter. Anyone have first hand knowledge of choosing one over another? Also, on that route...was thinking of staying at Le Soule, but it appears there's only 1 place to stay and it has pretty Christian overtones. Has anyone stayed there? Or should I push on to Espeyrac?

I took the route through Golinhac and it had quite a bit of up and down. My memory of the options presented there, was that the other route was described as much more difficult and a longer stretch before water sources.

I stayed in Golinhac - I think I got the last bed - and the place had a swimming pool, which nobody could use as nobody had a swimsuit. I think I stayed in Espeyrac too, taking a short day due to sore feet.

Can't comment on the variant, but I have twice stayed in Golinhac at la Bastide d'Olt. Food and accomodations (we had private rooms) were very good, but a little more pricey than other places we stayed.

Bonsoir @kmccue

I had a delightful stay at le Gîte du Soulier St Jacques (La Soulier). I enjoyed the camaraderie. There was no compulsion to participate in anything spiritual. There were volunteer hospitaliers who prepared an excellent evening meal for us all.

Compuac is on the GR 6 hiking route. Here's a link to some info and also a map on Geoporteil

I stayed in 2014 at Soulié and absolutely loved it!!! BC SY

Haven't done the southern route, but Golinhac is very worthwhile visiting for the spectacular view of the Lôt valley. There is a stiff climb up to and beyond Montegut, but then it becomes easier. I stayed in Golinhac at La Landette, a small private gite with individual rooms.
If you take the GR6, it's only 2.6 km from La Soulié to Espeyrac.

Hi there, I'm considering walking from Le Puy to St. Jean next spring if I can get my French up to par. I'm looking on advice on a few things: - Would it be too cool and rainy to start walking...
