For those heading out on Camino shortly, sharing this info from LifeHacker regarding E-Sim cards
I didn't realize that the cards could be purchased in advance of arriving in Spain.

I use Airalo every time I go to any country where my data plan doesn’t transfer. It will only activate when it connects to an applicable tower in country. The data is cheap and plentiful.
 
I've started using Airlo as well. Am happy with it but am wondering about using it while on Camino given that it does not allow in-country calling. I called ahead for accommodation a number of times in busy sections of the Camino Frances in 2022. Am planning to walk the Portuguesa in /24 and the Le Puy in /25.

You can use an app like Skype or Viber to make calls using your data plan. I use Viber, and the calls are only 2¢ a minute

Most accommodation is on WhatsApp and you can call from there via data
 
Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.

YES! I picked one up about a month ago for my trip, then put an alarm on my phone to tell me to activate it right before my flight leaves the U.S.
