Hello Everyone,

Greetings of Peace! I did the Camino last year from June 25, 2009 (St. Jean-Pied-de-Port) to July 31, 2009 (Santiago de Compostela). To celebrate the Feast of St. James (this year being a Holy Year in Santiago de Compostela), I had a photo exhibit on the Camino here in Makati City/Manila, Philippines. Mrs. Maria Elena Aquino Cruz, the sister of our President and Mr. Luis Arias Romero, the Ambassador of Spain to the Philippines were the Guests of Honor at the Opening of the Exhibit last July 24, the Eve of the Feast of St. James (July 25).

Hi Manny D..I am from Cebu City,Philippines..I plan to do the Camino de Santiago around the 15th May 2013..As it is, I am now in the process of doing my itinerary..I plan to start from St Jean Pied de Port...onwards till Santiago de Compostela...I would appreciate any information and/or resource websites/guide books regarding hotel listings in the towns along the way especially those that are possible to make a reservation in advance...single rooms with ensuite toilets..Thank you..Lotus F.

Hi Manny D...I walked the Camino Frances from Sep 11 to Oct 9, 2011. I am planning to walk again next year (2013) in Sep. I am attaching 2 pictures - my backpack with the Philippine flag and when I reached the highest point of the Camino (La Cruz de Hierro) which is between Foncebadon and Manjarin. Lotus, I am from Rizal but currently working here in Singapore. I am also planning to do a pilgrimage in May 2013. I plan to start-out earlier though, possibly first week of May. I'm a slow walker so I am allotting about 3-40 days to complete the walk and as much as possible, I would like to be done before the heat of the summer kicks-in.

I hope to see you in the Camino!

there's also peskywabbit (bunny) and her brother vincent, both from manila. not sure if they are still active here, as they completed their camino from sarria to santiago in 2006/07. we had dinner at podium pre- and post-camino (theirs).

and also yours truly, who had been lurking for half a decade. i'm thinking of doing part of the camino frances again in may 2013.

My friend Ian & I are from HK and we are starting on May 1st 2013, starting from SJPP. I'm a slow walker, and plan to take it easy, with rest days along the way. Plan to complete in about 40 days. Hope to see some other Asians along the way.

Happy to help a fellow Pinoy pilgrim. To walk the last 100KM, most people start from Sarria. It is a few KM more than a 100. If you have two more days to spare (or 1 depending on how far you are planning to walk in a day), I've met people starting from O'Cebreiro. The hike going down is worth it.

Sorry I don't know the exact details to get there from Barcelona. You can fly to Santiago then take a bus to Sarria.

You can take Renfe at Barcelona train station to A Coruna then Sarria.

I remember hearing Sarria over the PA on my way back to Barcelona

Mabuhay All! So excited to find this thread. Another fellow pinay here! I'll be walking the Camino with my mom and sister. We are from California but my mom has dual citizenship and spends half the year between both places. My sister and I are just "Balikbayans".

Lotusflower where will you start your walk? We will begin our walk Aug 28 from Pamplona and have given ourselves 30 days to arrive in Santiago. We'd like spend a day in Finnestere then back to Madrid for 2 days before flying back to California.

Hope our paths cross as it would be nice to brush up on some Cebuano!

Do you have to be a Filipino citizen to join the Confraternity in the PI? It may give me a reason to go home more often.

I grew up in Manila Philippines and moved to California 20+ years ago. I currently reside in Boston, Massachusetts. I have a daughter that also lives in Redondo Beach, CA. My friend and I started the Camino last year and we are doing sections of it one week each year. This September 1st we will be starting from Estella ending hopefully in Burgos on the 6th. Depending on the distance you plan to walk each day, we may bump into each other. Pamplona is a beautiful place and we enjoyed our time there last year. I'd recommend spending a couple of days. Make sure you try their pinchos (don't call them tapas or they'll correct you) and their wine from the Navarra Region, you'll enjoy it.

Last year We met pilgrims from many countries but not one Filipino, so I'm hoping we cross paths.
My friend and I will be hard to miss. Just look for the bearded Filipino guy walking with a tall Irish brunette. Hope to see you and your mom on the trail... :arrow:

A good number of Filipinos are doing the Camino from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela these months of September and October, starting at different dates. It's a train stop/destination. You can easily buy tickets on the fly from the station. Where are you de-planing?Buen Camino

jcatienza, When I walked Sarria to Santiago in 2006, it was a flight to Lavacolla, then a bus to Lugo and a bus to Sarria. Actually the most efficient route from Madrid then. And you never saw the spires

I hope to de-plane at Madrid then take the train to Santiago.

januz, I am again going on the Camino in May, accompanying a tour group from Manila led by a friend of mine. If you de-plane in Madrid, just take the flight to Lavacolla and the bus connections to Lugo and Sarria. Doesn't take that long and the flight avoids the old city, so you don't see the cathedral at all. We will be in Sarria on May 3, so we will just miss you Buen Camino!

These days allowed me acclimatize myself to the weather and a good preparation (spiritual, physical, emotional, psychological) before crossing the Pyrenees. It's nice to see that some Filipinos are very active in walking the Camino. I am a resident of US but still holds a Philippine passport. My husband who is a US citizen and I are planning to walk the Camino in October 2015. I am in the process of applying for a visa Schengen visa, but one of the requirements is to have an invitation from Spain. Did you guys have this problem as well? Can someone help me how to go about this? I know that I have to fly to San Francisco (I live in Portland OR) to apply in person. Any info will be very much appreciated.

I just recently completed the CF (SJPDP - SdC) last June 20. It took me 32 days with a rest day in Leon. I met my first Filipino on the second day of my camino (we stayed in the same albergue). She was the only other Pinoy I encountered until I reached Sarria where I met a group of Filipino pilgrims on the camino. I had a conversation with them in one of the bars and they were a bit surprised that I was walking alone from St Jean. I had to remind them that you are never alone in the camino - physically and/or spiritually and that their camino is as good as mine albeit shorter. I carried my backpack and theirs were transported to the next town.

In Santiago, I again met three Filipinos who would begin their camino two (2) days later. They would take the bus to Sarria and begin there.

It was great to meet fellow Filipino pilgrims during my camino and I wish that more Filipinos will do so in the future. I have inspired several of my friends (Filipinos and others) to consider doing the Camino.

I will visit the Don Bosco Pilgrim's Office when I am in Makati next time. Do I have to call first?

You're fortunate to meet Filipinos during your Camino. There is now a great interest in the Camino de Santiago among Filipinos.

You are most welcome to visit us when you are in Makati. Please e-mail me first at mannydomingo@yahoo.com or text me at 09195010374. Or if you find yourself in the Makati area either on the 1st or 3rd Sunday of the month, I usually celebrate the Holy Mass at 9am at the Legaspi Market. A number of Filipino pilgrims attend the Mass before they leave for the Camino with Pilgrim's Blessing just before the end of Mass. Some of those attending that Mass were also Camino pilgrims. We usually have breakfast after Mass.

Hello, kapwa peregrino!

I just recently completed the CF (SJPDP - SdC) last June 20. It took me 32 days with a rest day in Leon. I met my first Filipino on the second day of my camino (we stayed in the same albergue). She was the only other Pinoy I encountered until I reached Sarria where I met a group of Filipino pilgrims on the camino. I had a conversation with them in one of the bars and they were a bit surprised that I was walking alone from St Jean. I had to remind them that you are never alone in the camino - physically and/or spiritually and that their camino is as good as mine albeit shorter. I carried my backpack and theirs were transported to the next town.

In Santiago, I again met three Filipinos who would begin their camino two (2) days later. They would take the bus to Sarria and begin there.

It was great to meet fellow Filipino pilgrims during my camino and I wish that more Filipinos will do so in the future. I have inspired several of my friends (Filipinos and others) to consider doing the Camino.

I will visit the Don Bosco Pilgrim's Office when I am in Makati next time. Do I have to call first?

I did not stay in Grañon. I was at Santo Domingo de la Calzada. I missed out on the albergue experience over there based on my conversation with other pilgrims. In one of the albergues, an Italian co-pilgrim wanted to see my RP passport as he has never seen one.

As my Castellano is decent, I sometimes acted as interpreter to the non speakers. I really hope that more Filipinos do the Camino and I, for one, encourage my friends to do, at least, part of the Camino.

I, too, am interested if the Fr Manny still offers the Camino mass.

I have a question regarding Schengen visa application in the Philippines. Based on the embassy's website detailed itinerary and accommodation bookings are requirements for application.
Question:
How does one go about showing proof of accommodation since as pilgrims of the camino one stays in auberges and does not have confirmed bookings for stay in Spain?

I am now in Santiago de Compostela. From being a pilgrim being welcomed, I am now assigned to welcoming pilgrims especially Filipino and English speaking pilgrims at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. I will always consider myself a pilgrim priest. Once a peregrino, always a peregrino.

I hear confessions (Confessional #4) during the 12 noon Pilgrims' Mass (12:00 noon - 1:30 pm) and in the afternoon (Confessional #14) from 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm. I also celebrate the Mass in English at the Chapel of Nuestra Senora de la Soledad (beside the Corticela) at 10 am on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and at 9am on Saturdays. Fr. Juan Carlos celebrates the English Mass on Wednesdays.

In five days you would only be walking approximately 20 kilometres a day and assuming you are both healthy and fit, it would be very doable.
Assuming you leave the albergue at approximately 7:00 am, you would probably want to reach your destination for the day by 2:00 pm. That is seven hours to walk 20 kilometres. That would be less than a 3 kilometre per hour day. In reality you will probably be reaching your destination by 12:00-1:00 pm, which can be a good thing sometimes. Or you may choose to walk longer distances and cover the distance in four days instead and spend an extra day in Santiago. Either way, 20-25 kilometres a day is what most pilgrims walk.

Eurail passes may be a thing of the past. Single tickets on train are inexpensive, relatively, and there are special offers all the time.

There are trains to Sarria, so you may be able to get there without going to Santiago first. There are buses from Santiago to Lugo, connecting to Sarria, a half-dozen times per day; you just have to get from the train station to the bus station, and there are city buses every few minutes.

As said in falcon's comment, simply buying single tickets from Madrid to Sarria without going to Santiago first would be a better idea.

The common stages between Sarria to Santiago is:
- Sarria to Portomarín ~ 21km
- Portomarín to Palas de Rei ~ 25km
- Palas de Rei to Arzúa ~ 30km
- Arzúa to O Pedrouzo ~ 20km
- O Pedrouzo to Santiago ~ 20km

Or you can choose to split the 3rd day to 2 if 30km is too much for 1 day.

Very doable at 3-4 km per hour and if there's only 2 of you walking you can probably pace yourself better and have shorter food/toilet stops in between. If you book accommodation in advance, the good thing is that you don't have to hurry to get to the next stop. And June is heading into peak season so it might be a good idea to pre-book. The advantage with not booking is you can stop whenever you feel like stopping for the day. Provided there are rooms or beds available.

Hi Toby, my husband and I walked the Camino Frances , SARRIA TO SANTIAGO in MARCH of this year 2018 for the Holy Week. We are both in our late 40s and we did the planning ourselves too. From booking our international flights, to booking the train ride on RENFE, to booking the hostels/ Albergues, to flight back to MADRID thru RYYAN AIR and the flight back home. We did gave ourselves enough time, so we can really enjoy the journey. We walked in the trail for 6 days, started on Palm Sunday and arriving in Santiago on Good Friday. We did have extra days for rest and sight seeing before and after the Camino. Our journey began by flying to MADRID BARAJAS AIRPORT, then catching the local train on Terminal 1, the local train is called CERCANIA. taking the local train is free if you can show a ticket at the ticketing office on the train station that you have a connecting ticket to CHAMARTIN TRAIN STATION going to SARRIA. Before all these, we. watched a lot of you tube videos and bought the book by JOHN BRIERLEY. We used it immensely as guide and the you tube video of a fellow pilgrim. EFREN, CAMINO SANTIAGO. If you wanted to watch Efrens video in you tube, just type in on the search engine the name above. We also practiced walking with our backpack, with the actual weight of 15lbs and the actual shoes we were going to use in the trail, one day every weekend at the most for 5 months, walking about 5 hours covering 12 KM at least. This is good muscle training and conditioning so your feet and your body will start having muscle memory of the long stretch of kilometers you will be walking per day. We were fortunate not to have any blister at all when we did our Camino, though the weather in Spain during the Holy Week was brutal. We got snowed, rain, sunshine and hailstorm along the trail all in one day. And the whole week was raining. It was reported that it was a very unusual weather in Spain especially in the Trail this year. It was very good that we came prepared. we made sure our gears are totally waterproof, the shoes, the pants, the rain jackets, and we bought water proof cover for our backpack as well. Anyways, There are a lot of things to plan and bits and pieces of details in our journey. Ill try to remember and log in again on this forum sometime. Happy planning. Me, my sister and brother did the Camino Frances from SJPP to Santiago in 2015, Once you get to SDC, one of the recommended place to stay is San Martin Pinario. They have rooms for pilgrims at a discounted price. Here is their contact info, "eservas H.S.Martin Pinario <reservas@sanmartinpinario.eu>", the place is very close to the cathedral and breakfast is included. Make sure you tell them that you are a pilgrim so you can get the pilgrim rate. In 2015, I think we paid 28E per night.

Hello Toby, I tried to look for my folder that contain details of our past Camino but couldn't find it at the moment, so ill just try to remember it as best I could. Anyways, id mentioned before we flew to MADRID and arrived around 8-9am and then took the local train located at the airport Terminal 4, they are called Cercania over there. We then got off at CHAMARTIN train station to catch our train straight to SARRIA that is leaving at 1pm. Its a 5 hr train ride to SARRIA, no changing of trains or connections. I booked the train ride thru RENFE, exactly two 2 months before our exact date of travel. Thats when it opens anyway on their website and you get the cheapest fare as possible. of course, You can buy from other websites/vendor, its just going to be more. Since I have copies of our ticket for the train ride to SARRIA, we just have to show it to the train office and they gave us free ticket for the local ride. Booking on RENFE for your ticket to SARRIA, you can choose the cheapest one, first class, the ride is very comfortable and its a FAST TRAIN. When we arrived in Sarria around 7pm. we stayed in 2 hostels, for the first night, we walked out of the train station in a pouring rain with other pilgrims, turned right and started walking to find LA CASONA DE SARRIA, our very first hostel. its near the train station, about 8-10 minutes walk. We didn't know the place so we wanted to get to hostel right away to rest. The second day, we stayed at HOTEL ALFONSO X. We did site seeing that day, visited the church Iglesia Santa Marina de Sarria and got our first stamp on our pilgrims book. There are nice restaurants around church, we ate dinner at Meson O Tapas. First day on the trail, its uphill climb. We booked our lodging ahead of time, being that its Holy Week, more people were on the trail and we didn't want to take chances, but looking back, I would say if you are traveling in June, you actually don't have to book ahead. You just walk and when you are feeling like you are nearly done for the day, you rest and look for the ALBERGUE. We stayed in hostels and hotels by the way. But again looking back, staying in ALBERGUES would have been more enriching and meaningful, you meet more pilgrims that way and interact with them, not only on the trail. Now, SARRIA TO PORTOMARIN is the usual route on the first day, but some people may find it too much. Theres a place you can stop, either in CASA MORGADE OR IN MERCADOIRO. WE stayed in MERCADOIRO, thats exactly the name of the hostel and the next day walked 5K TO PORTOMARIN. We just past by Portomarin because it was still too early and stayed in a small rural area called CASTROMAIOR, From there, on to PALAIS DEL REI, there are lots of albergue in Palais del Res but we walked further and stayed in CASA DE LOS SOMOZA in MELIDE. Then from MELIDE we walked to ARZUA, the next day to O PEDROUZO then arrived in SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA on Good Friday. We stayed in HOSPEDERIA DE San Martin PINARIO, used to be a monastery, great place to stay. Its in front of the COMPOSTELA CATHEDRAL, perfect location for your stay. We stayed there for 3 glorious days just soaking in the place, the activities all round it and since it was Holy Week,the multiple processions . It was quite a unique remarkable experience for us. We were lucky to experience the BOTAFUMEIRO swing in the Cathedral on Easter Sunday mass as well. Other things, we only brought our backpack, 15lbs weight. no check in. if in case you find it hard or for some reasons your backpack is weighing you down so much, theres a service called PAQ MONCHILA, they offer service to carry your rucksack from one place to the next. This is quite long, but I hope it helps you with your planning. BUEN CAMINO.

Theres a few of us who are Filipino-Americans who does caminos regularly. We’ve done 3 caminos - frances, portuges and fatima and God-willing Del Norte next year. We met an ex-PBA player and his Spanish-Filipino wife whose family is from Asturias i believe last 2017 in La Meseta. Ultreya!

I think they are open already. Most of Europe is open na din naman.
