Hi. My family and I are planning to walk the Camino from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela in June this year. I'm not sure how to get from Madrid to our beginning point in the town of Sarria. Has anyone done this route and can share how they got from Madrid to Sarria and also share an estimate of the cost for a family of three?

Thank you!

Martin

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Martin,

I just did this in February. I ended up taking the train from Madrid (Chamartin Station) to Sarria. Train got into Sarria around 6:30pm. Easy and a lot cheaper than taking a flight to Santiago and a bus to Sarria.

My only issue was that the route did not show up on the Renfe website until about 3 weeks before my trip. Usually routes are available 60 days in advance, but this one wasn't. I think it was because they were working on a schedule change.

Check out the trip report I did last month. Enjoy!

Jcat,

Thanks for the information! There are so many options and not one option would be something you would call easy. You're right; I checked the Renfe website and it is not showing up. Hopefully it will show up soon. Btw, how much were your tickets or is that in your trip report? How do I access your trip report? Sorry, I'm new to this site so I don't know where everything is. :-)

Thanks again!

When do you plan on making the trip? I just checked June 6th and the route is there. I took the 1:00pm train arriving in Sarria at 6:59pm. Tickets are 21 euros to 28 euros. Just depends on which train and class you select.

As far as travel goes, the train option is pretty easy. Just buy your tickets online, get to Chamartin Station in Madrid, and you are set. No change or transfer of trains needed for 1:00pm departure. Train station in Sarria is walking distance to hotels. Or you can take the overnight train and arrive in Sarria around 6:30am.

We're planning to make the trip on June 16. I checked out the overnight train but it seems a bit pricey. I'd rather stay in my hotel in Madrid and take the 1PM train the following day.

Thanks for the link! I'll be sure to check it out.

I checked the 16th and it's only 16 euros each for the train ride.

In Madrid I stayed at a hotel near the airport that had a free airport shuttle. The day of my trip I took the free shuttle to the airport and then the train to Chamartin Station. The train ride from the airport to Chamartin is free (if you already have an onward train ticket) and quick.

I got the tickets already. We'll be in Madrid for a few days before we go up to Sarria so we'll probably take a cab from our hotel to Chamartin. Thanks for all the help.

Hi Rafael,

Sorry for the very late reply. Don't usually check the forum now that we've finished our Camino. As expected, it was glorious! My wife, daughter and I had a memorable experience, one that we will treasure for the rest of our lives. We loved it so much we're planning to do it again but this time on another leg next year or 2018 at the latest. If we could do anything differently we would have walked earlier in May because when we walked it in mid June it was quite hot the last 4 days. Hope you will have, if you haven't walked it yet, or had, if you already did, a great time.

One thing to keep in mind. The train station in Sarria is about a 15 to 20 minute walk to the center of town.

Buen Camino

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
Is it normally this expensive?

Almost 54 Euros is the full fare in tourist class. You might find cheaper fares by booking online well in advance but once they are sold out, the full fare is the only available. Sometimes when full fare is the only one available on tourist class but some discounted fare remains available on Preferente class, a ticket on Preferente class is cheaper than one on tourist class. Anyway, if you are interested in train travel, take the cheapest fare available at the moment because it's peak season and it won't be cheaper. If train is too expensive for you, the alternative is bus from Madrid (airport or downtown) to Lugo with Alsa (www.alsa.es/en) and another one from Lugo to Sarria with Monbus (www.monbus.es).

Thanks for your reply, yeh because it is less than 3 weeks away that must be why it is €54.

I think the bus would take a good bit longer, so may decide to go with the train or try a different route.

Thanks :)

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).

I agree, I think the sooner you book the cheaper it is.

Hi I'm travelling to Burgos to walk part of the Camino Frances next year and my options seems to be fly into Santander and coach to Burgos, or fly into Madrid, then coach to Burgos. Don't think...
Hello! I’ve been browsing the forum and there’s plenty of info for baggage transfers from stage to stage, where you pick it up daily, give it back and move on, however what I’m after is a service...
