It makes an absolute perfect sense as long as the price of the ticket at that time does not go up more than said 20% (that and still a possibility of going bankrupt would be my reservations on the matter)
Regardless - good luck! hope it all works out and you made the right decision 👍
Yes I thought about that too.. if the airline goes belly up it would cause more problems economically. I am betting on the airlines getting new loans once the economy gets up and moving again. decided my two pittance may become a donation. 😉.

I hope not, I cant afford the loose all of my money because I am not rich, but I am willing to make an investment in a business that has treated me well over the years. it’s like anything else in life I take a risk hoping by doing something good and not thinking selfishly I can help in my small way.

I would not be happy if the price goes up but I’m willing to pay the difference over the 20% won’t be First class but at least I won’t have to pay the entire price of a new ticket. I can use it on any destination from any airport. no restriction except use in one year. If travel restriction are still in place I am sure they will extend it...I am having the faith of St. James or Jobe on this one 😁...my motto is try to take any negative and find a positive in it. maybe my God or karma will reward me in the end for my good deed 👀🙃

Today after I got that email I went to the market. a small still voice said but a lottery scratcher. I bought a $10 lottery scratcher at the grocery store and won $40 ....🤔🤓. coincidence ? maybe but who is to say 😛....

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).
So here’s the problem.

I have taken vouchers, but that may be foolhardy if the airlines aren’t around when the new normal arrives.

Well, I got my letter.... they cancelled my 1 June flights. I can re book anytime before 30 Sept for any flights that Etihad has as long as I fly by 31 July 2021. No refund but they do offer 5000 reward points. I was going to walk the Norte and then go to my daughters wedding in the Pyrenees Mt.'s in late July. The wedding was turning into a family re union too as people and friends were coming from all over America and Europe and Australia. The wedding will re booked on a wait and see basis as will my first camino.
I am not in the least bit sad or upset about these cancellations. It's a bit inconvenient and we all will loose some money, for sure, but when I contemplate what is going on in Spain, in Italy, in NYC where I have family and all the people that are doing it rough down here in Australia, now that is really upsetting....
Hang in there people.
We are strong and resilient and we will get through this, together.
This forum has helped me cope so very much.

Canadian news from yesterday's Globe and Mail Report on Business:

"Canadian airline customers whose travel plans are upended by the COVID-19 pandemic and travel restrictions can get credits from the carriers, but have no right to a refund, according to changes made by the federal government.

Canada’s move to waive airlines’ responsibilities to give customers their money back sets it apart from Europe and the United States, where airlines have been ordered by regulators to provide refunds to people whose flights were cancelled due to the pandemic.

In an online post on March 25, the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA), the airline industry regulator, said existing rules that had required airlines to provide refunds in some cases were written to address “localized and short-term disruptions,” and do not apply in the COVID-19 outbreak, which has closed borders and halted almost all international aviation."

Apparently the credits for a later flight are good for 24 months.

I have decided to fly with an American or European airline the next time I go to Europe to walk a camino.

Don't be too certain about European airlines. If I read today's news correctly, the same legal changes are being made in at least two EU countries and it seems that that's ok with EU law. Yes, that's a big change from the situation only a few days ago. It's been in the make for quite a while.
