If it is further on from Estella but within 100 k . from Grañon my last guess would be the donativo / parroquial in Logroño.

RENSHAW said 100km from Granon. I think San Anton just before Castrojeriz is just about there, depending on whose distances you use. So that might be a possibility.

No , sorry , but what a great albergue. To stay at the municipal rather than the church in logróno is almost a crime?

Haha! I dont exactly remember such a door, but my abiding memory of that balmy evening in September '16 was the announcement by the hospitalero at dinner, that it was usual practice to go and pray straight after eating, and if any pilgrims wished to be excused, they could instead make a start on the washing up. About 20 heathens bolted to the tiny kitchen to fight over pots, pans and plates, myself and my then18 year old son included. It was a lovely evening and a surprisingly good night's sleep on those mats, it had been a long and hot day.

I stayed at the parish albergue in autumn 2010 but missed Renshaw's wonderful door key.

Tosantos Hermitage


Early Tuesday morning was COLD! Puddles were frozen and hoar frost covered the ground although it still is 'only' October. Everyone that passed, pilgrims and locals, remarked that it was "frio". I am so glad that I brought my standard winter kit! Nevertheless, the weather was and continues glorious with brilliant sun and clear azure sky.

After crossing the rather depressing town of Belorado which resembles a deserted village in an old western movie I stayed at the pleasant parish albergue in Tosantos. The young hospitaleros, a Spanish guy and Belgian girl, did their utmost to make pilgrims feel at home. Late in the afternoon we all climbed up to a nearby hillside hermitage built into limestone strata. In the evening a simple communal dinner was served; then all twelve pilgrims 'hit the mats' to sleep on the rather frigid floor.

Today I moved on to Villafranca Montes de Oca. Every Camino I have stayed at this pleasant municipal albergue in an old school. Here, too, the door is always open. Each visit I recall being snowbound here for three days during the now famous 2006 blizzard; then this truly was a most welcome shelter! For tonight I am glad that there are bunk BEDS on legs. Floor sleeping isn't easy, or more accurately getting off the floor in the dark of night isn't that easy.

I have never stayed at a donativo yet, but still enjoyed watching your little game unfold!

I had my reservations about the donativo and Parroquial albergues. When I first walked in 2003 they were all administered by the church - how wrong was I . All I can say is that you need to experience such an albergue to understand. If I had to compile a list of top ten albergue experiences , 8 of them were at a donativos. I had expected a lot of dogma and archaic rules , instead they were a home away from home.
