6 weeks to go and visit to docs confirms Plantar fasciitis and achilles tendinitis.

Off to the physio.

Was just about to up kilometres for training now this.

Not ideal, but that's part of things. Sort it out and move on.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
Yep, been there, done that :)
Just get good advice re meds, stretching, taping etc.

I'm off for my Cortisone shots soon...... they can help.

I'm going through the same thing, with heel bone spurs ... I get on a plane March 17 to walk the Via Francigena starting in Fidenza ... has me somewhat concerned ... I can walk at a 21 minute per mile pace ... a lot more than the 17, 18 minute mile I was walking ... I may get the corticosteroid shot ... waiting on my doctor for that ... also got ankle braces ... doing these walks are so very important to me ... I think I will be OK ...

Good luck, hope everything goes ok.

My husband had the same issue, he was on a Statin to treat cholesterol, and that can be a side effect. If this is the case with you, you might want to talk to your doctor about an alternative medicine.

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).
For the achilles, I found great success with “eccentric heel raises”. Sometimes also called eccentric heel drops. I also paid attention to ensuring my calf muscles and soles of my feet weren’t too tight - a tennis ball and foam roller were very helpful. Of course - qualified medical advice is what you need, but perhaps you want to ask your medical profs If it’s worth you trying out. 😊 Wishing you all the best 🤞

I have both problems and have been using custom orthotics and trying to rest them now for almost 2 years. They are just coming good now. I have been told by a pain specialist who uses steroids to treat many pain issues such as carpal tunnel as a first trial before surgery that cortisone/steroid injections are not good for this issue and can be damaging. Make sure that you have expert advice about the steroids before you try them. Good luck. I leave for Podiensis on 17th April.

I've had three doctors and my podiatrist suggest that I do get cortisone shots.
It's hard to know what advice to take sometimes isn't it?

I wonder if you can get cortisone shots while walking the Via Francigena??

I was wondering the same thing myself..........for a different route.
I have found on three previous occasions, that whilst they help, the effect wears off after about a month.
My Dr reckons it should help for 4+ months.
But my feet say differently

My understanding though is..........
  1. You need someone experienced in doing it!
  2. And it should be done under ultrasound guidance.

I use a local 'imaging' centre that is very good.

...

I had the same situation prior to one of my caminos. These support bandages were a game changer for my PF, learned about them from another pilgrim on this site: www.supportthefoot.com. Same idea as tape, but I think easier to use. Heel drops/raises (standing on a staircase) were also really helpful for me. Hope you feel better soon and Buen Camino!

Be very careful about steroid injections into tendons. They are not recommended for they can weaken the tissue.

We cannot get into a discussion of the medical issues and conditions where a given treatment is or is not recommended.

Please keep the discussion of medical matters to your personal experience and general advice at the layperson's level.

There are a generally recognized number of cortisone shots (and dose per shot) that can be safely given for various areas of the body. Each specialist in each area of the body should be able to advise you.

HI Robo!
I know your journey with Achilles tendonitis has been long, complex and painful.
I am aware that the below maybe a complete non starter for you as you are probably aware of all that is available for the condition !

But on the off-chance you haven't and this might be helpful I've posted it.

I am sure my tendonitis i nowhere near as advanced as yours; i only have it in my left leg.
As i walk the Frances May 2nd i have been pretty peed off as i wasn't having much success with normal methods.
My podiatrist refuses to give me a cortisone jab in my Achilles.

However he recommend i try shockwave treatment;which i had last Thursday and will have again on 4th of April.
I was concerned it was a bit of quackery at the time;also not cheap at £80 a pop!(and bloody painful;twice as painful as a tattoo made me sweat)

However at this point in time almost a week later of daily walks with the dog there is a significant improvement although the long term is unknown.
If you and your podiatrist haven't discussed it might be worth a go;obviously no guarantee i will do anything in your case.
All the best
Woody
