When using booking.com, double check a city location first... it can be confusing...

We almost booked a hotel in Santiago, Chile, for the last night of our camino. Thankfully we caught it before committing the dollars. We couldn't figure out how far it was from the cathedral.

Walking with Wet Feet: Debunking the Myths

While I dislike the feeling of vaseline, etc, on my feet I think this should be read by anyone planning a walk of any length.

Is 42 days for SJPDP to Finisterre too long?

We did 42 walking days from SJPdP to Finisterre. We built in 6 other tourist days along the way. It was perfect for us. We met up with about twenty or so people who walked about the same distances each day, so each evening some of our loose grouping was together for the evening. By the last...

Bag transport with Correos (Spanish postal system) for 2024

We used Correos everyday of our walk from Roncevalles to Finisterre. (My wife has a bad back and cannot carry a pack for long) It was super easy to arrange, very flexible, and the pack was delivered by 1300h every day. We highly recommend the service. (We used Express Bourricot from SJPdP to...

    Pole Poll

I have been a cross country skier for 50 years. I use my poles for walking just like I use them for skiing, so I keep mine fairly tall. On flat ground I drop them ahead of my feet and then push off with them to propel myself forward, using each pole strike for two steps. On an incline they...

    Walking after arthroscopic knee surgery

I have had multiple meniscal surgeries owing to have been born quite bow-legged. Remove the offending cartilage flaps and life got better each time. Six years ago the same condition led to nasty arthritis and so I had bilateral knee replacements. 10 weeks after that surgery I was back in the...

    Look behind you!!

Our camino frances and fisterra was just over 1200 km long as we spent time exploring almost every extra site mentioned in Brierley. It made days tiring but wonderful. May he rest in peace.

Death of an Indonesian pilgrim on the Camino Frances

I'm going to make those numbers a bit more disheartening. The survival rate in out of hospital arrests with CPR is about 4%. If the arrest was for reasons other than an MI (heart attack) it is even lower. Even with good CPR the loss of brain is at a rate of about 11% per minute of arrest...

Walking the Camino at age 95!

Late to this discussion, but I had both knees replaced in 2017. We did the Frances in 2021 and it was wonderful to walk without that terrible pain. A camino is more than just possible! The most important thing in my opinion is to get as much mobility to the knee as you can. Aggressive...

Certificate in Sahagún - halfway on Camino Frances, completion of Camino de Madrid

We got ours the same way with the same circuitous route in October of '21.

    Trans Canada Trail

Since the discussion has morphed into canoeing I am going to brag about a couple of folks from Manitoba (our home province). Victoria Jason paddled her kayak through the whole northwest passage as a grandmother back in the '90's. It took her four summers...

Sad Day. A very Sad Day.

Oh, that looks beautiful! I can almost smell it and taste it. The best thing to end a day on the Way.

    Top 2 rest days places

We set aside five rest days, but we did them in the bigger cities and we ended up walking as much on those days. We finally admitted they were tourist days, not rest days. On our next walk we will make the distinction between rest and tourist days.

Short gaiters with trail runners on CF

I have a complete difficulty with walking. I somehow flip up mud and coat the back of my calves and knees. Evidently when it is dry it flips up and fills my shoes. Discovering gaiters was a godsend. Before gaiters if I was walking on sand or rocks I might have to stop every kilometer or less...

Short gaiters with trail runners on CF

I am a very big Dirty Girl Gaiters fan. I have worn them for three years, and am on my second pair. They are not waterproof, but they are made of bathing suit -like material so water running down your leg does run over them. They would not be waterproof for deep puddles. They sell a camino...
