    Botafumerio out of service

Not happening - Johnnie Walker just asked the cathedral staff directly. June at the earliest for its return.

    What's changed?

Update. The cathedral have confirmed that the Botafumeiro will NOT be used on Thursday. Latest guess is simply "June" with no specific date. Thanks to Johnnie Walker for asking the cathedral directly.

    What's changed?

I was in the cathedral yesterday afternoon. Still no pulley mechanism or rope in the frame that it hangs from. So probably not back in use yet. Possibly by Thursday but I wouldn't hold my breath.

    December camino

I walked in January last year. Rain was far less of a problem than it was for my later walk in September. Highly unpredictable. There is an excellent website listing accommodation known to be open over the winter. Updated frequently. It should be up and running in November...

Sello (stamp) Obsession: Is there a medical term for this?

From the Wikipedia article on Sellotape: "Sellotape was originally manufactured in 1937 by Colin Kinninmonth and George Grey, in Acton, west London.[1] The name was derived from Cellophane, at that time a trademarked name, with the "C" changed to "S" so the new name could be trademarked.[2]"...

Ryanair stopping service to Bordeaux in November 2024

The report is that they are closing the base there permanently.

Ryanair stopping service to Bordeaux in November 2024

Ryanair have announced that after November they will no longer be flying to/from Bordeaux. Unfortunate for those heading for SJPDP as it is a useful alternative to Biarritz. https://travelweekly.co.uk/news/air/ryanair-to-exit-french-airport

How the Camino has changed for me

My first Camino was the Frances at a time when it was (a) the only recognised route and (b) a very solitary experience. I have walked the Frances more recently in peak season and decided that "community, the sharing, the intense short-lived emotional bonds" are just not what I want from my...

LIVE from the Camino Feels Unpleasantly Busy on the Camino Frances (May Day, 2024)

For some years I had the same thoughts about the Frances. But I returned to walk it in January last year and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Totally different from a peak season journey and I found the far smaller numbers of pilgrims I did meet were on the whole much easier to get along with...

La Virgen del Camino albergue reopens today

Hiking poles on the plane in Santiago!

@Jeff Crawley I have a couple of ribbon lanyards with me - from waterproof pouches I carry my phone and documents in. They stay in my pockets and never round my neck. I hadn't got around to attaching them when I took the photo yesterday. A couple of screw eyes later and this is the Mk.2 version...

Hiking poles on the plane in Santiago!

Because it has been persisting down with rain now and again and a lot more is forecast for tomorrow. The mop would absorb lots of water and mud and end up weighing more than my pack. And sneaking it past hospitaleras in that state might be tricky...

Hiking poles on the plane in Santiago!

I flew from Bristol to Porto a couple of days ago with Ryanair. Even if poles were allowed they probably wouldn't fit in the dimensions of Ryanair's very measly free cabin baggage allowance. After Porto I took a train to Valença to begin walking from there. At an old-fashioned shop a couple of...

Re: Galego and Spanish on the Camino Frances

I'm in Arcade on the Camino Portugues today. Almost everything except bars and restaurants is closed for a public holiday to celebrate Galician language and literature. A huge change since my first Camino when regional languages were actively suppressed, all official signs were in castellano...

    Dual Pilgrimage

The dual pilgrim registration in Santiago is done through the tourist office in Rua do Vilar - not the pilgrim office. The procedure is to first go to the pilgrim office for your Compostela. Then take the Compostela and evidence of completing a Kumano Kodo route to the tourist office to register...

    Medication woes

I am walking the Camino Portugues at the moment. When I walked my first Camino aged 28 I think I carried one blister pack of paracetamol. Now 62 years old and with osteoarthritis in my knees and unpredictable innards after gallbladder surgery. My fairly minimal pack for this trip includes...

Airport buses - changes to services

Some news that was posted on Facebook by Johnnie Walker which I'm sure he won't mind my repeating here. Not sure who his informant was. The post was quite long but I'll just repost it here in full. "Hi John! Important news about the bus connections between the airport and the city that will...
