Advice on Getting a Second-Hand Gravel Bike?

I bought a second hand touring bike on Milanucious and collected it in Vigo. It successfully got me to SdC where I gifted it to charity. It was less trouble than flying the bike over :-)

Baggage claim: International flight to Madrid, connecting to Porto

Just a heads up you have to go through security again at T4 and there may be a short train ride to the gate.

    Lidl UK RockTrail’ Hiking Gear

I used a 35l backpack from Lidl to do the UK South West Coast path and it was very comfortable and gave a good few years of use (but not waterproof). The waterproof coats are brilliant and very good value for money. Coming to its end of life it also doubled as a makeshift ground sheet.

They look good. I had not seen them before.

    from SJPP on a Brompton!

I used a 20" folder on the Camino Portuguese and some of the other advantages were: Secure storage was never an issue Folders are less likely to be stolen. When fully loaded people would often ask about the trip - so the bike was a good conversation starter. Folding pedals were a godsend when...

Ferryboat de Caminha "Santa Rita de Cássia" NO ESTÁ OPERATIVO

For those traveling by bike, it might be worth noting the official ferry was the easiest way to get across the river and the water taxi may struggle (it was a small rigid inflatable in 2019). Things may have changed but the alternative is a lengthy detour inland. Also the route across the...

    Planning my ride to Lisbon

Hi, I went from Lisbon to Santiago using the Brierly guide loosely. When exiting Lisbon it is very industrial and you do not really have a choice other than to follow the N roads. Some of the Brierly green routes are very scenic but obviously geared to walkers, which can make it a struggle with...

    Spontaneous adventure or complete disaster?!!

Much good advice has already been said so I would suggest the following: Pack as light as you can. Try not to check luggage on the plane. Be prepared to discard stuff along the way - both physical and mental :-) Finally, a visit to Pilgrim House is a great way to conclude your journey in...

    Camino with a bike trailer

Hi coming out of Tomar along the river route (the waymarked route) may be problematic for a trailer. After the river, there are some steep climbs on gravel/unmade paths. After that, the roads are pretty good but steep in places.

    Enough time at Bilbao airport?

It sounds a bit tight timewise. Given the state of the travel industry at the moment it only takes a delayed flight or long passport control queue to derail your plans. Suggest having a plan B for your transfer. i.e. later bus

    EasyJet cancelled my flight 😞

Fellow Devonian here, so I feel your pain. I think the key to things at the moment is being agile and flexible with arrangements

    ATM Fees.UK Cards Spain

In Santiago, the Santander hole in the wall wanted 7 euro's transaction charge on a Starling card. However, Abanka ?? (the local bank I think) wanted a more realistic 1.8 euros. It pays to try a few if you are not in a rush.

Time needed for security screening at Santiago de Compostela airport.

My outbound Ryanair flight last week, from UK to Madrid was delayed 50 mins and my connecting flight (with Iberia) to Vigo was also delayed 40mins. The difficulties seem to lie with passport control and a lesser extent security.

Time needed for security screening at Santiago de Compostela airport.

Agreed, back in May it wasn't an issue - in Lisbon anyway

Time needed for security screening at Santiago de Compostela airport.

Hi, I came through Santiago airport security yesterday 28/6/22 (albeit early @7am) and security was well organized and I was through in 10-15mins (Ryan air text allows 2 hours). If you are transiting via Madrid it was more like 30 mins in security. Passport control is the biggest issue, so...

Useful communication apps while on Camino in Spain (and possibly other EU countries)

Just to throw this in the mix if you use booking.com app there is a feature where you can message the accomodation directly in the app. It also has a translation feature built in, so language is not an issue. This worked for me in Spain this week and is very efficient. I used Smartly network...

"Working from home" along The Way(s)?

Just a heads up that August is school holidays time in UK and generally more expensive than the rest of the year. I'm going to suggest the South West coast path in UK. 500 miles of green and blue with varied terrain. You will be in and out of signal, so it will pay to plan ahead for WiFi.

Camino Portugues - Bike hire or 2nd hand purchase near Vigo or Redonela please

Just to follow up on this thread I did manage to buy a second hand hybrid bike in Vigo for less than bike hire or the cost of flying my own bike over. Glad I didn't choose the later as bike would definitely not made the connection flight at Madrid. I am looking for suggestions as to what to do...
