Is there really a waterproof solution

I bought my poncho at the shop more or less across the road from the pilgrim office in SJPdP and was happy with it except my arms got wet from condensation due to the elastic cuffs at the wrists - so I cut the cuffs off. Leaving ther ends of the arms open made all the difference! I walk in...

Guide books - are they worth it?

I like the maps-only version of Brierley. Has everything I needed, including symbols hinting at interesting things nearby, but letting me discover this "unprepared". I used the 3 or so pages of printed albergue listing that the pilgrim office gave out in 2016, next time I think a phone app would...

    Washing clothes on CP

This works in hotel rooms, especially since you won't have access to a wash tub, but can be a problem in a hostel with limited amounts of hot water. If the first pilgrims use the hot water for clothes then the rest may get cold showers. (no flames intended)

Portuguese road advert sign - No Bom Caminho

I saw this sign on the televised stage 2 of the Vuelta bike race, which was in Portugal. I thought it was a negative camino comment (surprised to see a road sign saying this) but web translate doesn't think so ..? The road sign (pic below) says :- "Governo para as pessoas. Portugal no Bom...

Volunteering on the Camino with a dog

https://www.pilgrim.es/en/plan-your-way/the-way-with-pets/ says :- Accommodations between Sarria and Santiago that admit pets It is very important to plan well the places where we are going to spend the night, since not everyone admits our four-legged companions. List of accommodations...

By choice or dealing with the unexpected: how to sleep outside???

I havn't done it but met an extreme low budget peregrino who did it every night on the Francés. He had a hammock for sleeping in the wild but also slept on church porches and in public gardens. Advice was :- Set up late. Leave early. No fires.

    Traveling with a cello

Give it a try (first before you go) 1. Do a full-day walk with a full pack weight several days in a row and see if you son wants to play each night. 2. Get the pack-frame and cello carry bag sorted and do several days walks, playing each night.

    Low-hanging fruit

Similar thing happened to us, two older ladies in the field called us over and gave some grapes. But then they wandered off themselves and we wondered were they pickers or just passing by like us ... they had no baskets or containers

What do you do on a rest day

What do I do on a rest day? Sleep in (a little) Laundry (a lot) and dry everything! Walk around with no backpack but carrying valuables of course. we "rested" in Pamplona, Burgos, Leon, Ponferrada, Villafranca del Bierzo which was more or less once a week. Check out the exit of the town for the...

    On-line pics of sellos

A while back, someone posted a suggestion for an app showing all the sellos available (I did a search but did not find that thread). Anyway, this came up on FB the other day, under the name CaminoStamps. Seems to cover the Francis and Portuguese. Link to the google map is :-...

Paulo Coelho's "The Pilgrimage" to be made into a Netflix movie

I liked The Alchemist, but not The Pilgrimage. His book Hippie is more real world (if the '70s were real).

    Embarrassing moments

I tried to help a small, older lady open a heavy church door just after lunch .... and received such a scolding it drove all my small Spanish out of my head. Of course she was closing it and I was the oafish tourist trying to push in and keep her from lunch. I was quite shattered for the next...

Advice… please… 🙏🏻 (About starting time each day)

At home I go to bed late and wake late, but I had no trouble becoming an early riser on the CF. After a day's walk an early bedtime was welcome, and it gets hot after 1 or 2pm so best to get the walking done before then. Sometimes we even started walking before the sun was up, quite good...
