A couple of weeks ago Wendy and I walked the Via Ellenica in Italy with another couple. We loved it and here's a short recap!
Basic Information
The Via Ellenica is part of the Cammino Materano series of trails in the south of Italy (connected to the city of Matera). Specifically, the main...
The main reason to walk the last 100km is to end in Santiago and receive the Compostela. So if that’s not your goal, I would avoid the last 100km, as it can be very busy (Francés) and/or not as interesting (in my opinion) as earlier stretches on virtually all routes.
As @C clearly says...
So to confirm: if we take Laurie’s Valle de Silencio detour we don’t miss anything regarding the Roman mines / views at Medulas?
I am already second-guessing this camino more than any other! I was just thinking after @C clearly ’s post that maybe doing the regular route might be best because...
Thanks all! Let me try to get my head around the Monforte-Chantada stretch.
First, Monforte doesn't sound unmissable to me as an overnight stop (El Greco is not a big enough draw). Though the problem with continuing further is that the timing won't be right the next day to see inside this...
Hello Invierno veterans!
@Wendy Werneth and I are a few weeks away from our Invierno, starting 19 June. I have long wanted to combine the Invierno with the Olvidado (dating back to a 2018 conversation over a glass of wine or two in Lisbon with @peregrina2000) but we never managed to fit this...
I liked Arcade as an overnight stay. If you have energy in the afternoon you can walk to the medieval bridge (even though you will cross it the next day) and walk a bit more along the waterfront to the west of the bridge. A Romana over the bridge was a nice drink spot but Google says it’s...
I haven’t walked the traditional stage but the fact that many take the metro from Porto to Matosinhos indicates that it may not be a great walk. The Litoral is along the river and then the coast and is very pleasant (although personally I didn’t think much of Matosinhos).
Here are my musings...
If you are set on one of those two choices and none of the in between options, I’d choose hiking sandals. There’s no need for boots on the CP coastal in my opinion — it’s mostly flat road/path/boardwalk walking, not mountains and rocks.
If you are open to other possibilities, trail runners or...
Thanks for sharing, that was an interesting perspective. I thought this was the most instructive part:
That's worth keeping in mind as we go through another year of 'Is the camino too crowded?' type threads.
Although the part below goes against the typical wisdom here, which is to try to...
Thanks!
Not yet, I’ve only just started some basic planning but I’ll keep it in mind.
The short stage into Monforte is not ideal but if it’s a good place to explore, maybe we should make it a priority.
Ha, might have it figured out by the time we arrive in Santiago!
Not exactly, we have 13 walking days.
This is my rough plan though I'm in the very early stages of looking into it and haven't gone through the planning thread properly yet:
1 - Ponferrada - Montes de Valdueza 27km
2 - Médulas -...
Good points. O Barco certainly sounds like the nicer overnight option, but if we do that plus your two-day Valle del Silencio opening, that will be three 27km days to start with, which is a bit more than we’d prefer. Though I guess the 12km next day is almost a rest day!
