    Be considerate....

One thing to add to this ever interesting shower shoe debate: after walking I wear Birkenstock EVAs or Tevas, whichever I have brought at the time, to avoid two things - plantar fasciitis flare-up and slipping on wet tiled floors! On my Inglés last week I twice had to wear my sandals in the...

    Travelling Light

I have been taking Birkies for the last two or three years on my Caminos. They are made of EVA, so ultralight and waterproof. They forst started with the Madrid in black, then added colours, and this year they even made the Arizona (2 staps, so more stable) in EVA. Even used them on VDLP to walk...

    Footwear

Interesting! I will look into Hoo. I was thinking of a backup walking shoe and flip flops for the shower. I suspect a walking sandal would allow my feet to breathe a bit (although I'll likely wear socks the entire time). Footwear discussion could be endless! Thank you. Porto to Santiago last...

    Footwear

...my Salomons were invited. Oh how I missed my HOO. Never again will I walk without them. As for a second pair, yes, you need one, sincw walking shoes are left by the door and you will want something to go to the shower with, and perhaps also walk around town in. Crocs work, as do EVA...

    other shoes?

Only 1 extra pair, double duty, town and shower, so must be platic. Consider Crocs or EVA Birkenstocks.

    End of day footwear

To add to your confusion, I remind you that your feet and sensitivities are your own and no-one can rely on the experience of others in this area. Whatever you do it will not make or break your experience. I took Birkenstock EVAs which are cheap, made of lightweight plastic of some kind...

LIVE from the Camino Via de la Plata -March 30-April 22, 2017

Camino number 7 begins. This time not for 3 weeks, but for 6, a one in a working-lifetime opportunity in between jobs. So it will be Via de la Plata for three weeks, then the Invierno to Santiago, and then ... drumroll ... the San Salvador. Of course, all this, if joints, tendons and muscules...

"Feet Growing" while on Camino (??)

Even walking steps every day I would guess you didn't do this with a rucksack on your back?

"Feet Growing" while on Camino (??)

It's not unlikely your feet had already grown out simply from all that walking at work -- your feet don't keep growing every time you do a Camino, or if they do it'll be a much slower process after the first time. Even IF you are one of the people that this can happen to. But you're right...

"Feet Growing" while on Camino (??)

I bought larger shoes and for me it was a mistake. I did take care to stop every two hours during the first week or ten days when I was 'getting used to it' and take off shoes and socks and rest at least 15 minutes. Then the temps dropped to very cool and I stopped doing it. I gave us wearing...

    plantar fasciitis

Oh yes, that reminds me: on the stony-pebbly parts of the trail - Atapuerca and the walk up to Rabanal spring readily to mind - try to put your foot on good size pebbles so they hit the arch and roll over them! You can massage the sole and take your mind off the pain at the same time, looking...

Thongs ... when done walking for the day

I think Birkenstocks are a great shoe, and know several peoole who love them. Unfortunately they do not work for me. I am rather flat footed and the shape of their pronounced arch absolutely kills my feet!

Thongs ... when done walking for the day

Birkenstock EVAs worked for me, you can wear your regular socks or bare feet in them. Walked Burgos to Santiago in them as well as in Albergue and around town, no problems. And I wear them all the time at home, including right now. Very light and only $35 as I recall.

This thing about equipment for the Camino .....

I walked with two pilgrims that stopped in Paris, went to Decathlon, bought the necessary stuff, continued on to SJPdP and walked the 800 km. They did fine. I succumbed to a flirtatious impulse to buy expensive Hoka hiking shoes after reading accolades on this forum, wore them for a month of...

    Sandals...

Another reason why I like to wear my Birkenstock EVAs in the shower is to prevent slipping inside the shower or on the sometimes very slippy tiled floors outside.

    Sandals...

Have a look at the Birkenstock EVA Madrid sandals - weigh nothing, more supportive than flipflops, perfect for showers and pottering about or nipping out for a meal.

Shoes for only the last 100km

There is no answer, whatever they wear will get them to the end. I am 67 years old and walked from Burgos to SdC in Birkenstock EVAs with no pain, no blisters, and was ready to walk around the towns in them as well. They are cheap, light and really do work where my expensive Hola Hola hiking...

    Shoes

I'm the Birkie marketer, defender, promoter. And LOVE them. I bought them and bragged about the, when they first came out, and black, red and white was all that was available. Mine are black. They now have yellow and other perky colours, including, if you like to "pink it up", fuschia!

    Shoes

As someone else mentioned, EVA Birkenstock worked for me with double socks, thin under wool thick ones. In fact I walked from Burgos on in them, perfect comfort up and down all the hills after my Hola Hola hiking shoes caused problems. People did look at me strange, but they worked fine. I went...
