first-timer packing list starting April 11

Forgive me for responding for @skyedogstudio - but since we both seem to be fans of the waterproof EVA Birkenstocks she included on her list, I can say that they work perfectly as Croc-like flip-flop equivalents for shower use or walking in the rain or mud. (I especially value them for the...

And they float. Not a Camino priority but, buen Camino.

Footwear for afternoons and evenings after walking.

You can often find knock off EVA Birkenstocks in discount stores. I picked up a pair on sale for $5 last year.

I can't say enough good things about the EVA Birkenstocks (aka "Birkencrocs"), which are very lightweight and provide better support for me than flip-flops or Crocs do. https://www.birkenstock.com/us/eva-sandals/

Here are the promised links re boots and socks. Hi-Tec boots and Bridgedale coolmax liner socks, both available from Cotswold Outdoor. We wear a pair of coolmax liners, then a pair of the thinner Corrymoor Sportsman with a final layer of the cushion sole Corrymoor Companion. If you prefer knee...

Oh my gosh, so much valuable information here I am going to read and reread it all. Thank you all so much. I will definitely be googling Meindl shoes, Altra trail runners and I think a purchase of Birkenstock Eva's is definitely on the cards! You are all amazing!

I have just completed the Camino Frances route from SJPP with no major foot issues! I used Merrell Moab goretex shoes. I got caught in 2 torrential downpours and my feet got soaked and shoes didn’t dry out over night even with newspaper! Next day I changed socks 3 times as they soaked the water...

UK Ladies Share Your Shoes Info!

Worth bearing in mind that what you’re planning to undertake is essentially a village to village walk through a very developed civilised country. What makes it different from most regular walkers’ experience is 1. It is a multi-day venture 2. It is predominantly on hard surfaces, with a fair...

UK Ladies Share Your Shoes Info!

Hi and welcome! I live in the UK and use Cotswold for their knowledge, customer service and also my 15% Ramblers discount ... If you are walking in the summer, or just if you have hot feet like me, I would go for a non-waterproof trail shoe like my previous favourite Salomon X-Ultra, or Hoka...

Join the quest for the perfect panel loading camino pack?

I see no reason why they should not be - but are all rucksacks female, like ships? If not - and there are two (or more - I am nothing if not ‘woke’) genders - how does one tell the difference Anyway - I’m delighted that you have found something which really works for you.

Join the quest for the perfect panel loading camino pack?

Update on the panel loader quest: I have just returned from a 300 km walk on the Francés, in hot weather, with my supposedly 25L Osprey Escapist. I have dared myself to do it many times but this is the first time I have actually done it. And it performed great! Not too full, just enough...

Chaco sandals pros and cons? (plantar fasciitis dramas)

Thanks for your reply and I will try on EVA's when I get to shops and glad to hear they are not all narrow. I wear Madrid ordinary Birkenstock all the time so it will be interesting to see the lighter ones.

Chaco sandals pros and cons? (plantar fasciitis dramas)

@Zebo: I have a pair of Birkenstock EVA sandals, the Madrid model, and I can guarantee you that they are not a narrow fitting. I took them with me on my pilgrimage on the VdlP and was pleased with their lightness and the comfort which they give me in the evenings. My feet are wide, so that I am...

Chaco sandals pros and cons? (plantar fasciitis dramas)

Laurie, thanks for your reply and very helpful. I think i need to spend qualitytime looking at all the styles and brand's and trying them out when I go home. And also go see a podiatrist. I used to wear specially made orthotics when I was a runner but have not done so for past 12 years now. I...

Chaco sandals pros and cons? (plantar fasciitis dramas)

Hi, Zebo, I don’t have PF, but I do need good arch support and I cannot imagine walking without my silicone orthotics in my shoes. I can’t think of any downside of wearing the orthotics. I have tried the Birkenstock EVAs and they bear very little resemblance to the cork-soled sandals. They...

Chaco sandals pros and cons? (plantar fasciitis dramas)

It's been helpful reading this thread on PF as I have been unsure how to best prepare for my first Camino, 18 July and Primitivo. Thanks for all the tips and its good to hear what has worked for people. I have had PF for over a year and got some plantar orthotics, airplus, about 6 months ago...

Chaco sandals pros and cons? (plantar fasciitis dramas)

Quick update on my previous post - the Archie arch jandal is not cutting the mustard ---- since found out that Birkenstock in Australia have a lightweight jandal 167 gms (same mould as the cork traditional jandal ) EVA style they fit like a glove - not for lots of walking but good for recovery...

Chaco sandals pros and cons? (plantar fasciitis dramas)

I wore these same Birkenstocks for town and albergue wear on my last camino.

These are the Birkenstocks I have (made out of EVA so very light.)
