    Pack Cover Failure

I do this. I just wouldn't like the outside of my pack sopping wet. So maybe a poncho this time.

    Questions about the Altus

I traded my orange Decatlon poncho for the Altus and must sadly say the Decatlon one was way better at keeping me dry... the Altus is lighter and smaller and good in a drizzle or very light but totally fails in heavy or sustained rain. I got soaked every time it raind longer than a few minutes.

    Questions about the Altus

Altus are not 100% waterproof.I have the newest version and it still leaks after half hour of rain.I am looking at getting a marine grade coat or even a shool "yellow raincoat".I I have just completed Del Norte .I am disappointed with the Althus as its a great design I have had 4 of them now...

    Chinese shops???

Bob, there is a pilgrim shop at the base of the steep stairway that you climb to get up onto the main street in Sarria. It has everything, including poles and ALTUS ponchos and anything a pilgrim might need.

Surprised at our test results poncho vs jacket

I think that anything that you wear that is truly waterproof will turn into a sauna suit at the right temperature. For anyone with sewing skills, check out this thread about the "Parcho," which has sleeves like the Altus but is lighter weight...

My Take on the Rain Jacket vs Poncho Debate

They just don't know how to easily put it on. And this is all the reasons I love my Altus: (And I was a hard-core rainpants and jacket person, who used those in my line of work for almost 20 years as a field biologist in very wet places. I'd never use that set-up on a camino, though.) No...

Travel woes - trapped in Dubai

We are making our way back to Madrid after completing the Camino Frances and we're heading to Madrid via San Sebastián. We have two sets of hiking poles and two backpacks with two Altus Ponchos . We're happy to meet you in Madrid on Sunday or San Sebastián on Thursday through Saturday morning...

Would it be overkill to bring both a rain jacket and the Altus poncho in Oct/Nov?

Thank you for this suggestion. I actually just bought a Houdini jacket from REI Outlet for half price. Tags are still on and I've been undecided whether or not to keep it. It looks so paper-thin, I wasn't sure how windproof and water-repellent (not waterproof, I know) it would be.

Do I need better rain gear? (or mental strategy for rain)

I concur. I wore my rain jacket and Altus poncho. Mostly stayed dry and warm. My feet and shoes were ankle deep in mud- no way out of that.

LIVE from the Camino Camino Primitivo 4/2024

    15. Day - Vilar de Cas to Lugo, 15km This time I don't sleep in an Albergue, because I will stay in Lugo for 2 nights. What a luxury to have a whole apartment for myself. Walking was quite easy - just in the beginning a bit up, but the rest was 'a walk in the park'. Of course was it raining...

Would it be overkill to bring both a rain jacket and the Altus poncho in Oct/Nov?

My husband and I will be walking our first camino from SJPP to Santiago, then on to Finisterre and Muxia starting on Sep 7. We are slow walkers and plan to take some rest days, so we are planning about 2 months for our journey. (Yes, we are really that slow! Also, we just retired and have no...

    sizing of altus ponchos

I know there has been lots of discussion about the altus poncho. I have lookedo at the sizing suggestions and wonder if anyone has comments about their accuracy. I am 5 feet 5 inches tall and weigh 112 pounds. My new pack is 36 litres. Supposedly a small would be appropriate. I am most concerned...

    Folding up an Altus?

The Altus poncho is like the bottom fitted sheet on a bed…one can spend their entire life trying to figure out how to fold the d@#$ thing! My Osprey pack has a built- in rain cover with its own pocket, soooo; since the Altus covers the pack as well, I don’t need both. The built-in cover is...

    Altus products in forum store?

Yes, the zipper makes it easier to put on/take off, and you can use it to regulate heat.

My Take on the Rain Jacket vs Poncho Debate

For classic ponchos I agree, they can be awkward to put on and take off. The Altus "poncho", however, is really not a poncho because it opens in front and is put on like the rain jacket it is. So I guess I fall in the camp of rain jacket people... as long as it's a rain jacket that also covers...

Would it be overkill to bring both a rain jacket and the Altus poncho in Oct/Nov?

Short answer, bring both. I'm glad I have both right now on the Francis. Where jacket every night to keep warm from the wind.
