Saint Jean Pied de Port to Roncesvalles, leaving in the afternoon

For those who are not native speakers and may not be aware, hiking along a road is not hitch-hiking unless one is also "hitching" (seeking to get a ride from passing vehicles). The actual hiking part is now optional in the usage of the word hitch-hiking (some will just wait at the entrance ramps...

Camino Vasco through the hills and mountains, called Saiatz trail.

I was on the Vasco (Irun to Vitoria-Gasteiz) last Nov-Dec and I did not see any other pilgrims. Plenty of local walkers, bike riders, etc and all wished me a good morning in Basque, no "Buen Caminos" for the 6 days. The only part where I felt alone was on the stretch from Zegama to San Adrian...

Saint Jean Pied de Port to Roncesvalles, leaving in the afternoon

We are having a bit of a cold snap in a large part of Europe. I heard from people living in Brighton on the south coast of England that they had hail the other day. And on the top of Route Napoleon in the Pyrenees between SJPP and Roncesvalles it will feel cool on this September Friday...

Three extra days in Spain - Recommendations?

I've lived in Spain for three years after visiting here many, many times. So I've been to a lot of the country. If you enjoy art museums then Madrid is a must. I deeply enjoyed the Naval Museum and the Archaeological Museum in additional to one or more of the three biggies (Prado, Reina Sofia...

VDLP - Too late in the year ?

Hello All, I am thinking to walk the VDLP in the next couple of weeks but am wondering if I have left it a little too late for this year. I am less concerned about daylight hours (clocks go back in a couple of weeks time) ... and not so worried about the weather, but was wondering when the...

    Walking in late October/early November

The second time I walked from SJPDP to Santiago I did it in October/November and had absolutely no problem finding albergues open. There were just enough pilgrims but not too many. Weather was great going over the Pyrenees, in fact better than my first time in July but you never know in...

    Mozarabe in September

Indeed we differ, around 17c is for me perfect walking weather. I've also done way below 0c in Peru and Nepal (one morning -15c) but I prepared for that by wearing layers, hat and gloves. And it was so physically demanding that my body warmed up quickly but those darn fingers took way too long.

    Weather on Via Podiensis Sep-Oct

On Podiensis, the weather should be fine. But take care that arriving in Galicia by end of October, beginning of November probably would mean rain, rain, rain. Last October I walk from León to Santiago (being in Melide on October, 31st): 12 days of walk, 12 days of rain. Galicia is very wet.

Walking from Santander to Gijon commencing 18 June but worried about accommodation...

Be prepared for rain. I've been on the Norte twice in June and it was wet. I had better weather in October. The coastline is known for its fickle weather. As far as accommodations is concerned, I've never had a problem but the last time I was on it was June 2022. Here in The Netherlands the...

Camino Frances in September - experiences

We started 3rd week of Sep 2023, the weather was still pretty hot first two weeks, 35/36°C at times. But no bed race. But toward mid October, it started to rain quite a fair bit.

    November weather

Due to some personal commitments I am unable to start walking the Plata until October 12th. I am curious as to what the weather will be the first couple of weeks in November. Mainly what to expect north of Salamanca. Thanks for you help Jim Michie

Looking for suggestions where to find an Altus poncho - they are sold out everywhree!

I just purchased a Ferrino rain cape from Amazon. Couldn't find the Altus anywhere. I've always been a rain jacket/pant person however I did the Via Francigena the latter part of last year and the weather proved to be unpredictable and very challenging. The jacket pant pack combo became...

    Planning around Semana Santa 2025

If you don't mind colder weather why don't you think about starting in late October. Many fewer pilgrims walking. Yes fewer albergues open but you will always find a bed. You will still meet plenty of people from around the world. I also believe, although I am not going to get into my reasons...

Starting Vasco in a week, any tips?

Hi there! I'm considering starting the vasco in a few days (sometime between the 5th and 10th october, depending on other things and possibly the weather). I will be relying on gronze for accomodations, as often; the albergues mentionned seem to be opened either all year or up to the end of...

Best Time of Year to Walk Madrid Camino

I walked the Madrid last year Sept 23-October 5th. Not one bad day of weather, and no seasonal closures yet. Great time of year to be walking!

LIVE from the Camino Cameron's Primitivo

Hi everyone, first time poster and on Day 2 of my Camino! Wanted to give back to the forum, for all the valuable information I've received so far (and perhaps my first timer mishaps!). So to share at this stage: Day 1 Oviedo - Grado, 19 October. Excellent weather conditions, cool mornings but...

Camino Primitivo in Early October - Seeking Advice

Oviedo from Barca. Train if you like long train rides and, yes, the fast route is Barca to Madrid, Madrid to Oviedo. Otherwise fly. As for the language: learn the niceties and use them. And use the translation app on your phone. Phrase books are still full of “and I will require lodgings for...
