Can I Walk the Camino Without a Smartphone?

It can be done, of course it can. Depending on the route you walk and the time of year staying on the path and organising accommodations can be more challenging without it. I deleted all news sites from my phone and after the Camino realised they didn’t bring anything positive into my life so...

What would you tell a new pilgrim NOT to do ?

Listen to your own heart and not to the voices of others particularly those Camino professionals you will invariably meet. Having done a Camino or three they believe themselves duty bound to share their unsolicited insights. Don’t let the fears of others become yours.

    Returned

At the beginning, particularly, water is a challenge. There were no fountains or watering holes. Depending on the weather it can be very hot. I left Seville late April with temperatures in the upper 30s. Each day I carried 4.5 litres of water and 1.5 litres of an electrolyte drink. I needed...

    Returned

Some stages after Cáceres can be a bit challenging between distance and accommodation. I used Gerald Kelley’s “Via” app and found it very useful. The monastery at Oseira was a wonderful experience. I took a rest day in Cáceres which was well worth it.

    Shin splints!

I had shin splints on VdLP. I used compression socks at days end, ibuprofen and a topical anti inflammatory cream purchased from a pharmacy on the way. Stretching before walking also helped. Advice I heard from someone who had through hiked the Appalachian Trail was for the first 30 mins each...

Should I replace my Hokas now?

I have worn Hokas and La Sportivas. In my experience they’re good for 1000 kms. If yours are showing signs of wear replace them before you start your Camino. As others have said trail runners don’t need to be broken in they’re ready to go out of the box.

    Oh to be young!

    Maintaining weight on Camino

As @Bradypus observed “loss of appetite during hot weather” can be a big factor. There is a chance of high temperatures in September. I found I struggled to eat enough for the first 10 days of the VdlP in late April, early May last year when temperatures were in the mid to high 30s. Everyone is...

    Half a wild boar

In Castilla y Leon Período especial jabalí: en toda la región, del 22 de febrero al 7 de octubre, en esperas o aguardos en horario nocturno o diurno para reducir sus poblaciones. Special wild boar period: throughout the region, from February 22 to October 7, hides or hides at night or during...

    Half a wild boar

But this was not in France. While off putting to some it was not illegal. Given the sheer numbers of boar in many areas and the damage to crops they cause it’s not surprising that someone would see this as pest control and take the choicest cuts while leaving the rest as carrion. Boar hunting in...

    Half a wild boar

Depending on where you are in Spain and the level of over population of wild boar this time of year is open season in many areas. Dressing your kill is vital if you intend to eat it. Leaving it on a busy path wouldn’t be what most hunters would do. Depositing it in the brush for foxes etc to...

    Barcelona and Tourist Taxes

Tourist taxes are nothing new and certainly not restricted to Barcelona. Fly into any airport in the USA and you’ll pay an assortment of fees and taxes. Stay in NYC, for example, whether in an hotel or an airbnb and you will pay state and city occupancy and hotel taxes. The effects of mass...

Spanish language on Caminos outside of Spain

The OP is from Texas where an interesting linguistic landscape exists particularly along the Mexican border. Aside from the obvious linguistic influence of migrants from Central and South America there is the fact that there are Spanish speaking communities that have existed since before Texas...

Spanish language on Caminos outside of Spain

The only “bleed” I have encountered is with Catalan in Perpinyá/Perpignan. That being said most would not view it as bleed given Perpinyá historically was part of the Principality of Catalonia. Quite a way from the frontier there is a considerable Spanish influence in Arles but it doesn’t extend...
