Thanks and just one more question re alternative routes

Thanks. I have quite dodgy knees that sometimes flare up after challenging terrain and so feel that I don’t want to risk them when I have so far to go before we reach Santiago. However if we ever do another Camino we will probably make it shorter maybe starting from Leon and then I would love to...

Thanks and just one more question re alternative routes

Depending upon how energetic and fit you are feeling, I can highly recommend the Dragonte route as one of the options leaving from Villafranca del Bierzo. It is a challenging day's detour from the main route but remains as one of my all time favourite days while walking various routes with its...

    App for Iphone with GPS

...on the Frances. I met people who walked with nothing more than leaflets given them at St Jean. I know people who braver than I, walked the Dragonte variant without GPS and that is one extremely badly marked route. The only people I noticed getting lost were two friends so deep in conversation...

    Out of Villafranca

Hola, i walked the alternative "Dragonte" in 2016, after we got lost short after the first climb, we walked together and had a super exhausting day but what a beautiful scenery, stunning nature. I think we came down to Las Herrerias...highly recommended only with experiences and enough food!

Exploring Route Variants on the Camino Frances: Natural and Historical Highlights

I admit that I didn't check the spelling when @David Tallan pointed out how I had spelled it - I was lazy and assumed he had checked. I wonder where the name came from. Thanks for the correction!

So then my preferred spelling is correct after all.🙂

I call it Ruta Dragonte because it's the correct spelling. 😉 https://trekopedia.com/new-guide-ruta-dragonte-on-the-camino-frances/

Exploring Route Variants on the Camino Frances: Natural and Historical Highlights

...nicer. Again, the longer route off the main road is what most take. Very pleasant. Absolutely: And yes, have a look at Pradela. The Dragonte is strenuous and very adventurous, so I haven't tried it. There is also a way at Najera that takes you to Yuso/Suso. I didn't go that way but it got...

Exploring Route Variants on the Camino Frances: Natural and Historical Highlights

I used to call it the Dragonte too, and actually prefer that spelling because anyone who has made it up and over that alternative beast has definitely "slayed the dragon"!

It seems like lots of places in Spain have different spellings. Zaragoza or Saragosa. And then there is Fisterra or Finnisterre.

Exploring Route Variants on the Camino Frances: Natural and Historical Highlights

I originally wrote Dragonte, then I saw C Clearly write Dragante and figured I must have been reading too much fantasy lately and misspelled it. So I edited my post to change it to Dragante. I guess I should have trusted myself.

The Dragonte Route has its own website here: http://trekopedia.com/wp-content/uploads/Trekopedia-Guide-to-the-Ruta-Dragonte-v1.0-May-2018.pdf and it is not listed on Gronze The Fonfria Route is shown on Gronze but it doesn't look that far away from the main route...

...route has you climbing those nearby mountains to the right and walking along them, further from the highway with the accompanying views. The Dragonte is much more of a detour, to the left. It is longer, with less infrastructure. There used to be significant concerns about the route marking...

    Scenic route from Villafranca

There is a girl who walked the Dragonte in the fall of 2019. She vlogged her entire camino. She had no problems at all. She is on youtube as I'll Get There

    Scenic route from Villafranca

I agree the Dragonte needs to be carefully researched, but I have read on this forum that it has been waymarked much better in the last couple of years, so hopefully no longer getting lost for those who decide to tackle this alternative route.

    Scenic route from Villafranca

..."conventional route" is much better since the opening of the motorway - I now see the "highway" as a minor road. Anyone considering the Dragonte needs to research it carefully. Experienced pilgrims have gone astray on that route. For anyone interested there is a Facebook group "Friends...

Thanks, I didn't know there were two options.

No, that is another variant from Villafranca. You might find that one adventuresome. The variant described in this thread is the Pradela. For information on the Dragonte the forum has a bunch of threads: https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/search/2045676/?q=Dragonte&c[title_only]=1&o=date
