2024 Le Puy - Cahors + Saint-Jean - León
I am already planning my 2025 pilgrimage, starting in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port probably on 22 April.

Albergue/Hostal Camino del Perdon. Gronze lists these as two separate establishments, with different addresses, but on closer inspection, they seem to be the one and same place. Can anyone confirm, please?

Despite some warm recommendations, a lot of comments on Gronze about these establishments are negative.

As regards Casa Baztan, I do not know what to think. TripAdvisor gives it 4,5/5, and Gronze is full of praise too, but on Booking.com there are some very negative reports.

Uterga would make a good stop-over after Pamplona.

Thanks for your help.

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).

As far as I know, there’s only two Albergues in that town: Perdon and Bazatlan. I was there in April 2024.

Theres also a “Hostal” Perdon which I believe is a separate building that has private rooms.

This year I stayed at Albergue Perdon and two years ago I stayed at Bazatlan. They’re both OK, but Perdon is nicer and much more comfortable IMO.

Check out the Eunate church , which is a short detour right after Uterga from Muzurabel.

Same here, I'm planning for 2025 and I wish to stop at Uterga, these two places are my only choices too and I'm not sure which to choose. Both have some negative feedback but I guess they're both quite alright if not too fussy.

I'll really appreciate it if someone can let me know how to contact either of these to book a room (prefer private room), I'm been trying to look online to see if they have a website.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

I changed my post because surprisingly booking didn't show anything in Uterga at the moment. But I found one website.

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
Only an idle thought but if I wanted to improve my chances of booking a room in one of my favourite spots I’d post a few dozen negative reviews on Tripeadvertiser and Berking.con. That should clear the road.

It breaks my heart when I see yet another old favourite appear on those sodding sites because I know what will happen next. Anyone dropped into O Bispo lately?

Just in case anyone is wondering which is my all time favourite Albergue - it’s the one where I get a bed, a warm shower and somewhere to dry my socks. All the rest is just stuff and has nothing to do with Camino or pilgrimage

Travel your own camino. Don't let other people dictate where you sleep at night.
Agreed. There are always some negative reviews about any given place at done point.
You have to really discern the information and see if what wad said makes sense.
My wife spent 25 years working in hospitality industry.
Her hotel had 1-star reviews because...
  • It rained every day and we didn't get to use a pool
  • I came for an interview and didn't get the job
  • I thought we'd be closer to the beach (near beach is 70 miles away)
and so on

Then there are people who go on Camino, stay at donativo albergue, donate 5€ and expect a 5-star luxury hotel "service" from a volunteer hospitalero/a and a breakfast to boot.

Just make your own best Judgment

Good luck and Buen Camino

Anyway I've contacted Camino Del Perdon through whatsapp and the reply was fast. Unfortunately they not taking any reservations for next season as they are renovating and they're not sure when it'll complete yet. Now I'm going to try Baztan, if not gotta stay at other stages..

I don't understand how two out of three platforms favorably reviewing the albergue is causing decision paralysis. There will always be bad reviews, because let's face it, often times guests, not the establishment, can be "bad". I can always tell a reasonably critical review from a "diva review", i.e. the guest is never satisfied, no matter what.

Walking a camino isn't about perfection. As @Tincatinker stated, a shower, warm bed and laundry line are about the only things I really need on a camino.

*edit: by the way I stayed at Casa Batzan--it's perfectly fine, no issues, good meal, hot shower, a bed. What more does one need?

Hostel del Perdon, along with 4 other hostels and hotels along the way, cancelled and refunded my Booking.com reservations on my ill fated 1 day camino in 2022. I actually called them from the top of Alto de Perdon and cancelled and they let me out of my booking. There was a spirit of generosity that day. Take that for what you will. I overplanned (very similar to how you are right now, may I add) because the forum said I would have a problem finding a private bed of some sort. For reference, the only one that wouldn't let me out of my booking and charged me anyway was Hostel Winderful in Logrono for the female only dorm pod bed. The reservation was for 4 or 5 nights in the future from when I called.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Another half an hour walking takes you to Muruzabal where there is a handy place. Easy to go on from there via Eunate without having to retrace steps. The Perdon albergue in Uterga was totally fine for me.

edit: when possible, if possible - book directly.

I stayed in Albergue Casa Baztan in September 2023 — the place had a funky old school vibe, including metal bunks, a small chapel, back garden and a great host. Dinner was plentiful. I’d stay there again. Buen camino!

I've stayed here twice and it was fine.
Ignore the reviews. Some people are never happy
Ditto, I too have stayed there twice, and I found it to be clean, comfortable and had good food. I recommend it.
I generally ignore reviews of albergues, especially any albergue that costs less than twenty or so dollars a night. I mean c'mon, twenty bucks a night (or less!). What do you want?
After my last walking of the Camino Frances, I came to the conclusion so many pilgrims are too app dependent and to some degree spoiled.

Stayed at Perdon in 2017 ( in the private room). Liked it a lot. Enjoyed beer in the outdoor space in front and had a very nice communal Pilgrim meal.

I stayed at the Baztan in 2023 and had a good experience. Comfortable bed, good food, friendly hosts.

I forgot the name but stayed twice at the albergue at Uterga, which is located on the left side of the road ;)
Nice big garden, and good food - I had a nice gulasch with was named "stew" on their menue.

I stayed at Bastan (+34-690-841-980) this year and last, and I really liked it. Run by a nice young couple, and they serve a great communal dinner. All upper bunks were empty both times. I stayed at the other place across the street 2 years ago. It is OK, but did not have a communal meal; rather, you can order dinner from menu and sit outside or in dining area.

Excuse my late reaction, due to the holidays. Thank you all for your comments and advice.

It’s useful to now that Camino del Perdón is undergoing renovation.

Contacted Baztan today, I don't speak Spanish so I asked in English (how to make a reservation for June) and they replied in a few hours. However the reply was 'B dias si es posible', I entered that into Google translate and did not get anything meaningful. Can anyone decode that? Or let me know what to reply? I'm trying to avoid pasting a translated message from Google translate to prevent more confusion.

B dias = Buenos días (shortened!)

So they are saying (and I'm adding the punctuation, as i think this is what is meant) Buenos días - sí, es posible (= hello - yes, it's possible).

I've had responses like this and they have meant that yes, they will take my reservation. Sometimes basically confirming the reservation, or confirming they have beds available on that day. My reply after that would depend on whether I'd already given them all the information they need. If unsure, I might say something like Gracias, ¿Necesita más datos míos? (= thank you, do you need more information from me?)

Or something like that. Hopefully someone with better Spanish than me will be along to give a better suggestion! I'm confident about the first part though - what their reply means.

Thank you! I managed to have a short conversation with the host and I've provided my name to secure a room (hopefully) for June. So so glad that I've managed to have all my accomodation more or less settled as I noticed some places like Roncesvalles are already booked out for June. Baztan was the last piece of the puzzle for me.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.

Same here. Albergue Baztan can be recommended.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

First, I’d like to say that I’ve taken a break from this forum for a little while, mainly because the advice that I give out has been Pooh Poohed by many of the forum members here. I realize...
good day, I arrive may 1 (día de los trabajadores holiday) will pilgrims office, outdoor gear store and some places to eat and or post offices be open ? Wanna start walk following morning
Another option I'm considering for the spring is walking for roughly a week in France, to SJPDP where I'll start my CF. Questions: - which route would make the most sense for me to walk...
Last time I walked the CF and wanted to go "off-stage", I was using the stages that Gronze suggests. I didn't occur to me at the time that the Brierley guide stages could be quite different, and...
