Madrid accommodation to fit my needs, your help please

I will arrive by train in the morning on this Friday. That Sunday I must be at the airport by 0800. I have a backpack and a large bag with no wheels.

I want to enjoy Madrid, in
accommodation before sundown and no nightmare stories getting to the airport.
Cost is a factor.
What is my best option?

If this is more than budgeted then maybe compare by leaving your heavy luggage in a locker at airport and use cheaper accomodation in the old town?

If you plan to go to the art museums (Prado, Reina Sophia, etc.), I would try to be near Atocha station. We stayed at the Oxygen which has pods for sleeping and lockers for luggage. It has a 24 hr desk and was clean and near restaurants, laundromat, and grocery stores.

There is an airport bus direct to the airport. I have taken it several times and it is a good option (see link below). The Cercanías trains 1 and 10 also go direct to the airport from Atocha. If there is more than one in your party, the taxis from the city to the airport are capped at 30 euros and can be a good value.

The airport express service links Barajas with the city centre in 40 minutes for five euros. It runs 24 hours a day and accepts card payment.

Recently I spent two sightseeing days in Madrid based out of this neighborhood. I walked to the Prado and other sights. You can catch the express bus to the airport near here as well.

This Hostal was fully booked but I would have stayed here if possible.

I generally stay around Atocha Station or La Latina. There are well priced Airbnb's around La Latina and this area is very central (walking distance) of most Madrid central city sights.

In August I stayed with two young professional women who rented out their spare room. Very clean and comfortable.

Madrid has a flat rate for taxi to the airport.
Super convenient for early morning, extra luggage or 2-3 people sharing.

It's important to note that the flat rate applies only when traveling from the airport to the city center, not in the opposite direction.

I just realised I may have been scammed the last time I went to Barajas, about 3 months ago, because they charged me the full rate and I naively assumed that was the reason. After a quick Google search I can see you are indeed correct.

And... I've been living in Madrid for 3 years.
Feeling a bit stupid now.
So be aware, fellow pilgrims.

Edit: Just to share the info, the airport fare has been updated from 30 to 33 euros recently this year. It's the fare number 4, it needs to be showing on the taximeter. Don't be like me. Here's the official info from Ayuntamento de Madrid.

Best budget way to get to the airport is metro. Also the 200 bus from Avenida de America is 1.50 euro and it runs from 5 am every 15 minutes. That neighborhood is less expensive to stay in and very close to the city center by metro.
