Hello fellow pilgrims,
I will be embarking on my first Camino at the beginning of October but I’m concerned about the wildfires and air quality conditions at the moment. Can you please advise what current conditions are like? Any travel restrictions?

Hi Renee. I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest you should have no problems beginning of October. First, look at this website: https://fogos.pt/. This tracks fires in Portugal on a day to day basis. As you can see, right now the ones they've been having in the north, around Viseu, are in remission. I live in the Algarve and I we actually had some rain this morning, for first time in about 6 months, and the weather has turned significantly cooler. The risk of fires in Portugal seems to be receding as we get into fall. You should be fine.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

That’s encouraging. Looks like more rain is on the way and hopefully that will help. Thank you.

We are walking the Camino Portugues right now. We had one day when the smoke from the wildfires kept the sun from shining but it is raining now. The wildfire risk is minimal.

That’s very good news. I appreciate that you let me know. I feel more confident now.
Buen Camino!

I've seen a few post elsewhere that suggest bringing a small cable and some type of padlock to lock your pack when going into stores, cafes or when at hostels. Other posts have said not to worry...
I'm currently planning to walk the camino in June of 2025. I'm 18 and I will be alone. I was wondering if anyone has any specific safety tips or things I should know about walking that camino...
Aemet just issued a new alert for a possible new DANA in Spain this week. I don’t know where to find infos in english. Check aemet and other sources and take care everyone...
