Bitten by dog on the Olvidado July 6, 2024

I just got bitten by a dog on the Camino Olvidado. At Concejero (stage 2 or 3 depending of how you go). There are two dogs at a farm with barbed wire, but they will crawl under and come after you. One bit me in the ankle from behind. Now, it's not like I'm bleeding to death but the teeth went through the skin so there are two bloody dots where he bit me, and on my socks. This was unprovoked. I called "Oiga" but no one else was around. If you pass through Concejero, be on your guard.

I was bitten by a dog a number of years ago that punctured under my arm and it was strongly suggested I get a tetanus shot, which I did...just saying.

If the teeth went through the skin, see a doctor asap and update your tetanus shot if necessary.

I am so sorry to hear this, BP! If it’s ok with you, I’m going to report it to Adolfo. It’s only 12 km from where he lives. Any more details to add or will it be obvious to him?

Isabel the hospitalera/voluntary is driving me to Espinosa de Montero now/this evening, so I can see a doctor. She picked me up at Bercedo with her car and I already got something to eat at her place in Villasante. I will owe her a lot after all she's doing for me...

When I walked through that part years ago, the only danger we had to look out for was that someone was maliciously crossing out all the arrows. This is not an improvement.

We’ll be waiting to hear about your trip to the doctor.

Are you already in contact with Adolfo? He called Isabel a few minutes ago and someone already told him about the dog . The healthcare workers are off to visit someone in the village so we are having coffee at a café in Espinosa in the meantime.

Yes, that was me! I told him you were with Isabel. He volunteered to go talk to the owners, and I told him you would provide more details about the location in case there would be any doubt about which finca it was. WhatsApp is a marvelous form of communication!

I got it all sorted out now: tetanus shot at the doctor's and antibiotics at the pharmacy. It only took four hours... I'll tell ya all about it. All I know is that Isabel is a hero: I couldn't have done this without her help. Health care workers also were interested in what farm and what dogs were the culprits in Concejero. It will be easy to check on Google maps.

Sorry to be late with the follow-up. Adolfo did go to speak with the owners, and they assured him that the dogs are always tied up. Well, obviously not “always,” since they bit BP, but it does seem like an honest mistake.
