You are right, but imagine Sigeric the Serious did his travel in year 990. Probably he didn't had so many roads he could have used. It helps when you are able to read a good quality map. If you uses one which shows you all hiking trails you may... -
In 1990 the pilgrimage was largely masculine :) The gradual shift to equal numbers of male and female and now the majority being female is one of the fascinating but little mentioned trends in the pilgrim stats.

I am reading it now. So far, so good -- it is a fun look at what the pilgrimage was like in the early days. It is a very masculine POV, with bits and bobs of fantasy. Not a masterpiece, but an easy read, something different than the usual trail...
