    In 1990 the pilgrimage was largely masculine :) The gradual shift to equal numbers of male and female and now the majority being female is one of the fascinating but little mentioned trends in the pilgrim stats.

    I am reading it now. So far, so good -- it is a fun look at what the pilgrimage was like in the early days. It is a very masculine POV, with bits and bobs of fantasy. Not a masterpiece, but an easy read, something different than the usual trail...
