We are using the Tarjeta Dorada now and the average discount is about 20%. Only correction I’d make is that I believe we paid 6 euro each. Took less than 5 minutes at the train counter to purchase and links to your passport number.
Renfe, the national railway, has a "tarjeta dorada" discount card for seniors. It costs 5 euro, and gets you good discounts on all but the most luxe tickets.
