I appreciate that Ryanair can present challenges to the pilgrim that even a grumpy hospitalero on a wet night on the Meseta cannot match. Nonetheless I think I would devote my energies to finding another airline rather than another rucksack. Or... -
the Compostela is just a piece of paper, a nice souvenir. It means nothing to anyone but the person whose name is on the front. The pilgrimage... now that's another thing altogether!

When I converted to trail runners I gave up on Gortex as well. So I bought one pair of SealSkins waterproof docks. They work but eventually if it's too wet for too long your feet get wet - even if it's only from water running down you legs/ pants...

I have taken Sealskinz on all my walks ! On the Portuguese Coastal had one really heavy rain day walked 6 or 7 hours in them and feet stayed dry. I wore a pair of Darn Tough light hiker socks inside them and had no issues!
