Most common gas canister in france

Hi Pelerins,

My route traverses France (from Rocroi to SJPDP) and I will also be staying at campsites, so gas canisters are essential.

I have done a ton of internet research and concluded that my threaded camp stove is no good in france - Decathlon sells threaded canisters, but it seems nowhere else.

There are (or were) adapters that can transform pierceable cartridges to threaded ones, and there are adapters that transform aerosol type -gas canisters to threaded ones.

Do you know which canister type is more prominent in France?

It seems the pierceable-to-threaded adapters have gone out of business. very difficult to find.

Thanks for your answer. I´m familiar with the types and with the adapters. However I would like to know which type of gas canister is more prominent in France (the pierceable one or the aerosol one), so I know which converter to get. Maybe someone who lives in France knows?

I´m not so concerned with Spain because I plan to stay in albergues there. I might forward my tent to santiago when I reach St. Jean.

There is at least one backpacking stove which is multi-mount capable. They can use both types of canisters.

The 'pierced' type canister is the most popular in Germany, France, and Spain.

As my post reported, my research showed me the same Dave (at least for France).

As I was hoping to also hike the length of the Pyrenees on the GR11 (didn't happen) and I wouldn't be sure what canister would be available in any town so close to the border I chose a stove that would work with either type. If I already had a gas stove then I would have gone with an adapter.

However seeing that the pierced-type canisters are probably most prevalent, I´ll get the adapter for that one. Next problem: most of those adapters have been discontinued

I found one at Mercatorgear though. And they seem to have good service.

I think this is one of the adapters. This was on the US Amazon site, but you might be able to use that product number to search in your locale.

I think these are the ones you can get

The one you mentioned (Kovea Butane adapter) is for aerosol-type canisters
Kovea PAT adapter is for easy-click type gas canisters
Kovea P-adapter is for pierceable type gas canisters.

You're right; I have a hard time telling which is which without getting my hands on one.

I do know that Kovea Supalite stoves are terrific; I used one on my Pacific Crest Trail thru-hike, and it is still going strong. The stove and canister fit nicely into my multi-tasking cooking/eating/drinking titanium mug.
