Rice or Pasta Sides

Hey, does anyone know if you can buy rice or pasta sides (dehydrated just add boiling water) packet meals in the supermarkets in Spain? I only ask as depending on my next hike route, I may need to consider meals in the field so to speak. Thanks in advance.

You can certainly buy noodles and although I can't remember I believe Uncle Bens Rice and others are available. Depends to some extent on the size of the supermarket. Small shops in villages don't stock a big range of anything and in some villages there are no shops at all.

Nowadays you can get pretty well anything in the big supermarkets. Another thought, easy open tins of sardines with today’s bread - mmmm! If you can take fish.

haha everytime I think of sardines, I remember that Tom Hanks movie "The burbs" and that sickly sound of peeling old sardines from a can haha

The reason why I ask is I am planning a thru-hike of the PCT in the near future so I thought it might be a good way to test gear with a bit of stealth camping on less travelled Camino routes where distances between towns are further apart.

Spain is a very dry county and suffers from wild fires every summer so if you are going to stealth camp do not light fires, use camping stoves, gas or meths, as the dangers of fire are very high. I believe, but can't find a reference, that doing any of the above is illegal with fairly stiff penalties. Best to eat early in a town or village and then move out and find your site for the night.

Oh we have no intention of having camp fires and yes we will be using a camping stove when needed and we always use leave no trace policies... no question about that one. We intend to use village bars when possible as I said above we need to really field test our equipment and ensure our gear works for a long distance thru-hike whilst enjoying the amazing vistas of Spain.

There are packet noodles/rice everywhere. Also packets of stuff like dehydrated bolognaise & other meals. All are light to carry and just need water. Also pot-noodles, buy a drink in a bar, they will be happy to fill it with boiling water from cafe machine. I also use bread/tinned fish (prefer Mackeral), cured meats last a few days in your pack even in summer. Small pots of meat spread sold everywhere. And Fruit, bananas are good (especially with chocolate)!. Add a box of 1 litre of wine for one Euro, you are good to go!

Thanks Davey, that information is fantastic and definitely helps me. Alas, when I did the Frances last time I was just focused on walking and being able to reach my destination (major surgery 12 weeks prior) and thus didn't go to a Tenda or Mercado.
