Walking poles in Sarria

Hello, my sisters and I will be walking from Sarria to Santiago in a few weeks time at the end of January.

We are flying with Ryanair from London and they do not allow walking sticks/poles as part of hand luggage.

What we're slightly worried about is; as it being 'off season', will there be anywhere in Sarria open to buy walking sticks? If anyone could recommend any shops or anything we'd be most grateful.

Also looking for somewhere to donate them to when we get to Santiago as we can't take them back home on the flight with us!

The have good equipment including maps and their prices reflect the high quality.

The shop link above is likely the best place to pick up decent quality poles in Sarria. They sell just about anything you could need to complete your Camino.

The shop is located on the right-side corner, as you are facing "the stairs..." You will know what I mean when you arrive. You must walk up the long stairs to connect to the Camino and leave Sarria.

The 111 km marker is just beyond the top of the stairs near the convent.

For another option, we picked up a surprisingly nice pair of trekking poles at a tourist souvenir shop for only 25 euro. Lightweight, shock absorber cork handles, adjustable to any height, and padded ergonomic wrist straps, they were very nice. Too bad we had to bin them at the Santiago airport b/c the baggage handlers at the Madrid airport were on strike. We grew quite attached to those trekking poles after so many miles together.

You can also pick up walking sticks made by the locals for under 10 euros that will work just fine.

The store at base of steps in SARRIA is a very good choice as mentioned here .
Using the poles is essential in my opinion as I sustained pain in my knees when coming down into Portomarin and had to finish my Camino . The poles really helped .

If you want to carry the stick on the plane, you will have to ask the airline for their policies, and also the agency that does the security checks at the airport (different from the airline, but I don't know where you are coming from). Even so, the individual inspector has the discretion to refuse the item, so be prepared with Plan B. You need to decide if this particular stick is that important to you.
