€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
It's a bit hard to read the list (I'm on a phone)...but the gap seems to be in Asia: I don't see Nepal, Bhutan, Laos, or Cambodia (Edit I thought Thailand and Sri Lanka too but they're there--but where's Japan?).

Papua New Guinea and Nauru are also missing. Thailand is there though (Tailandia). I'm amazed that Kiribati and Tuvalu made it onto the list.
One surprise - no Vatican City. That made me start wondering how many passports are issued by the Vatican. I suppose many people will have dual citizenship and will travel on the other passport.

hmmm thanks..... but they seem to have forgottenus.. two other pilgrims and me... the pilgrims from India. But nevermind .... St James knows ;) Buen Camino

I apologize. There are 79 Indian pilgrims !!!! India's done very well

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Quite a lot of people! Guess there are some thousands who did not registrate at the office either, like me when the queue was down the street.

Thanks for the list, Johnny - interesting reading .. well over a quarter of a million pilgrims! Crikey!! Would love to know how many were the minimum distance and how many from further afield. Eire surprised me, the population being so small. It is a shame that the website is down as I would really like to know the numbers from various starting points - mainly as I would like to calculate the numbers of pilgrims on the three main in-France routes.

@David For the years 2004-2013 you can find detailed, yearly reports here: http://peregrinossantiago.es/esp/servicios-al-peregrino/informes-estadisticos/ Not sure why they stopped posting them. Buen Camino, SY

I think that people in Germany and Austria are more familiar with the Camino than those in the mainland UK because of the Jakobswegs crossing them maybe? Also remember the UK includes the Catholic population of Northern Ireland.

According to Sil and others, you can multiple this number by 4 or 5 to approximate the total number of pilgrims that walked some section of the camino in Spain in Spain. This means that over one million people were on one of the camino routes during the year.

This includes pilgrims that did not register with the office upon arriving in Santiago, and others that simply walked or travelled a section of one of the routes without arriving in Santiago. For example many Europeans walk a one or two week section on the camino every few years and it maybe on their fourth or fifth visit that they actually arrive in Santiago. Others that have walked the camino in the past decide not to register on future camimos.

I am not sure if I buy into into larger estimate but it clear that one of the new trends, is that more people are walking an alternate route to the Camino Frances route and based on the starting points walking shorter sections than in the past. Along with tourism pilgrimage and changing demographics it is very possible there are many more people on one of the routes at any given time, more than what the official registered numbers suggest.

I'm fascinated by the countries and territories at the bottom of the list--places like Greenland, Mongolia, Madagascar...who'd have thought it? Wonderful.
I don't have the time (or that much interest) to justify further procrastination ;) but it would also be interesting to know what countries have the greatest per capita representation. NZ has almost as many pilgrims as teeming China...and India's way down the list if you consider its representation relative to its population.
I have never visited Bhutan but according to what I have read about the country it does not surprise me that they are not in the list - they may have no need for it :).
Yes the country with a 'gross national happiness'. Hmm, Hopefully one does not need to be miserable or neurotic to walk the Camino or we'd all be in trouble.:D

@Viranani Reminds me of the old saying "You don't have to be crazy to work here, but it does help a lot." In Camino terms you could say "You don't have to be miserable or neurotic to walk the Camino, but you might be in good company." Buen Camino, SY

Some of the temporary disruption may be due to the office's recent move. Another likely reason for some of the statistics not yet being posted might be due to Cesar Rua Cebrian simply being too busy to get it done.

When Maria was promoted to the Pilgrim Office Director slot last year, Cesar assumed the statistician role, if I recall correctly. He also serves as the "go to guy" in the office to get near anything taken care of. In any event, and in connection with the move from Rua do Vilar to Rua Carretas, Cesar must be doing his "one-armed paper hander" routine.

I will be patient...

BTW, the entire pilgrim welcoming and processing system is being reimagined with a target number of 465,000+ pilgrims for the next Holy Year in 2021. Yikes! I can easily see this happening, with five more years of normal growth, followed by the Holy Year surge.

The local, provincial, and regional governments are also on board with this. They are intent on insuring that the carrying capacity for the Camino, write large is increased and improved. At least the right people are in the same room talking to each other. The proof will be in the execution.

As it is, this being a special Year of Mercy, proclaimed by the Pope, I will venture an educated guess that the 2016 total number of pilgrims will slightly exceed 300,000 pilgrims. My "margin of error" is 290k to 310k.

I hope this helps.

@Viranani , I was interest at comparing the data for Americans and Canadians. Despite having 10 times it's population, there are only twice as many Americans en route.

Yet they are the ones publicly wearing religion on their sleeve (you never hear a public reference to religion in politics, the news, etc., no politician asking for God's blessings, nor any interest in our politicians religious/Church affiliations -in Canada-) but again, apparently only 10% of Americans have a passport. All sorts of reasons why some countries are more represented than others other that their ties to Catholicism/Christianity.

I am curious about the numbers from Portugal as I jave come across very few: could it ne because most walk from Portugal?

Also the numbers for the Primitivo are staggering! 11.5k over such a short stretch. There are a few more on the Norte, but they get spread out over almost three times the distance.

It really would be interesting to know what the average length of an annual walk is: we could then understand the impact of those walking the Camino a week at a time.

Now I want to know who the 15 nations are that are not represented!
Tonga, Fiji, East Timor are three. (But I'm half Tongan even though I don't have a Tongan passport.)
Hi Donna, I noticed that there are two other western Pacific island nations/countries that are not included. They are the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). Both are independent countries in their own right and as such are members of the United Nations. An online population data search a few minutes ago revealed 103,549 for FSM and 52,634 for RMI as of 2013. As you may know these two countries are similar to the Republic of Palau who showed 12 pilgrims in 2015 in that all three were formerly part of the United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (UNTTPI) along with the Northern Marianas at the end of World War II. A similar population data search for Palau revealed 20,918. So there were 12 pilgrims from Palau with a much smaller population than either FSM or RMI. OK, the website to check is www.peregrinossantiago.es Pick your language, click pilgrims office, click statistics.
The numbers for 2015 added up to predictions made earlier this year: 262'458 That's about 10'000 short of the total during the Holy Year 2010, and a hefty + 43% compared to the total in 2011.
Details can be taken from the website.
The interesting part of looking at pilgrim "volumes" is how they developed over the past 5 years (2011 through 2015)
Foreign pilgrims increased by 54'549 (+64%) as compared to the Spanish who increased by 24'516 (+25%)
The increase in numbers of pilgrims from overseas (USA, Canada, OZ, etc.) have outrun any comparison between 2011 and 2015. This year alone, pilgrims from the USA and Canada made up for 13% of all foreigners.
Europeans are still mainly represented by the Spanish (obviously), followed by Italians, Germans, Portuguese, British, Irish, etc. (in that order)
There is a shift since 2011 in the age groups: whereas the proportion of under 30's remained steady (28%), the over 60 group increased from 15% to 17% (obviously at the expense of the 30 to 60 age group)
Whereas the overall pilgrim arrivals in 2015 increased by 10% compared to 2014 (and 10% between 2014 vs 2013), the Portugués increased by 22% (21%), the Primitivo by 28% (22%), the Inglés by 29% (64%), the Norte by 5% (13%). The VdlP increased by 5% (- 5%) Take your conclusions!
The new Pilgrims' Office will no doubt be busy in 2016.:)

@fraluchi , I'm afraid I don't understand these numbers. Would you mind clarifying? Nor can I find the satats for 2015 on the site, only by month, or for years stopping In 2013. What am I doing wrong?

Of course since the Northern Marianas became part of the U.S. in the mid-1970s, any pilgrims from there would most likely be part of the U.S. numbers In that regard, I was surprised to see Guam listed separately from the U.S. when Guam is a part of the U.S. (If there were pilgrims from Puerto Rico, would the authorities at the Cathedral list them as Puerto Rico or include them as part of the U.S.? As the pilgrim office notes down the nationality in the Credencial but doesn't require to show a national passport me thinks that the nationalities stated are those the pilgrim identifies most with and has therefore noted in his Credencial. That way a pilgrim that lives in in Puerto Rico could have been noted down as either US or Puerto Rico. Buen Camino, SY

@Viranani ,

Yet they are the ones publicly wearing religion on their sleeve (you never hear a public reference to religion in politics, the news, etc., no politician asking for God's blessings,
Oops!!!! Sorry to disagree - at the end of every speech made by recent Presidents of the U.S. They end it with "God Bless America"!!!!!!

That question may be impossible to answer ;). What is a nation, what is a country, and are these countries of residence or countries of origin? Réunion is listed but it is part of France and I don't see Vatican City in the list :).
Well, we use " Country of residence" and not our nationality! Considering that I have lived outside my country for more than 50 years and it's fairly well represented in the statistics, I chose to give credit to our country of residence. A country just over
5 million inhabitants and still hasn't topped 100 pilgrims walking!

My turn to ooops, that is exactly what I was refering to regarding Americans the common refernce to religion. I meant to say that in Canada you do not hear that, and I suspect their would be a hissy fit if anyone tried it.

It really would be interesting to know what the average length of an annual walk is: we could then understand the impact of those walking the Camino a week at a time.
Yes it would. Unfortunately it takes ages to get the stats off the website into a format that can be analysed! I did attempt to break down the growth in the overall pilgrim numbers between 2009 and 2014 to see what was driving it. What stood out was that the growth was driven almost exclusively by Sarria and SJPP starters. (Some of the increase for SJPP may have been tempted away from Roncesvalles, where the numbers fell significantly.) The numbers starting anywhere else were pretty static. Hence the Camino Frances became more polarised between long and short Caminos. To some extent these will cancel each other out if you calculate an average distance walked. It does mean that the increase in pilgrims passing through somewhere in the middle of the route (eg Sahagun) is much less dramatic than somewhere shortly after SJPP or those arriving in Santiago.

Yes, I see what you mean now. I reread your posting!
In any case, how much nicer it would be to hear the words " God Bless Peace" or "God Bless Mankind" or " God Bless the World"!

Now I want to know who the 15 nations are that are not represented!

The list mixes sovereign states, territories that aren't considered as sovereign states and territories that are considered sovereign states just by some (but not all or almost all) sovereign states.

The list of sovereign states recognized as sovereign states by more tan 50% of UN members not represented on the list provided on the original post is bigger than 15. It's (if I didn't miss anyone) this one:

Africa:
  • Burkina Faso
  • CAR (Central African Republic)
  • Chad
  • Guinea Bissau
  • Ivory Coast (aka Côte d'Ivoire)
  • Liberia
  • Seychelles
  • South Sudan
  • Maybe one of the Congos because there's just one listed and the number of pilgrims is of just 2.
The Americas:
  • Grenada
  • St. Kitts and Nevis
  • St. Lucia
  • St. Vincent and the Grenadines
Asia:
  • Bhutan
  • Cambodia
  • East Timor
  • Laos
  • Tajikistan
  • Turkmenistan
  • Yemen
  • Maybe North Korea. Corea is on the list but doesn't specify if it's (just) South Korea, (just) North Korea or both.
Europe:
  • Holy See
  • Kosovo
Oceania:
  • FSM (Federated States of Micronesia)
  • Fiji
  • Marshall Islands
  • Nauru
  • PNG (Papua New Guinea)
  • Samoa
  • Solomon Islands
  • Tonga
  • Vanuatu
That made me start wondering how many passports are issued by the Vatican.

Data about Vatican citizenship from 2011 available at: www.vatican.va/news_services/press/documentazione/sp_ss_scv/informazione_generale/cittadini-vaticani_en.html

I don't see Nepal

As @Kathar1na said above, Nepal is on the list with 3 pilgrims.

Pilgrims from "Yugoslavia" must have been on the road since before 1991...

and pilgrims from Antillas Holandesas since before end 2010...

P.S.: Yugoslavia existed till 2003 although its territory was much more smaller than before 1991.

I have never visited Bhutan but according to what I have read about the country it does not surprise me that they are not in the list - they may have no need for it
Yes the country with a 'gross national happiness'.

I don't know if you read about Christianity in Bhutan but if you didn't, you could take a look at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christianity_in_Bhutan#Restrictions_on_the_Christian_faith

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Catholicism_in_Bhutan

If there were pilgrims from Puerto Rico, would the authorities at the Cathedral list them as Puerto Rico or include them as part of the U.S.?

Yes, they would. In fact, they are on the list. There were 247 pilgrims from Puerto Rico. Therefore, if both Puerto Rico and Guam are on the list, I guess that pilgrims from Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa and/or the USVI (if there were any) would also be listed separately if they specify they are from one of those territories and don't introduce themselves just as Americans.

I think, and I am pretty sure on that thought, that the cathedral/pilgrims office accepts the nationalities provided by the pilgrims, no matter if/how they are accepted by the Spanish state or other authorities. A pilgrim of one of the countries of the former Yugoslavia might just decide, perhaps even because of lack of language, to state Yugoslavia than to try to spell "Bosnia and Herzegovina" for example. In the Pilgrims' Statistics I should appear under Costa Rica residence (not to be confused with Puerto Rico) where I live since 18 years. My nationality is of the Netherlands (Holland) which I left 68 years ago (at age 10). Among other countries, I've lived 18 years in Switzerland, 20 years in Italy, several years in Belgium, France, England, Germany, Spain, etc. so that in fact my origin is predominantly European, more recently with a Latin tinge.

The only exception I saw to that general rule was that every person who gave the nationality "Catalan" (and there were quite a few) was placed in the Spanish category. :)

yeheyy! Filipinas 236; i guess i met 7 of them at SDC. they did the last 100km of camino frances while i did the ingles. however, i wasn't counted as from Filipinas since i didn't have a Philippine passport. I already miss the Camino. I'll back for sure!

I wouldn't exactly call the RMI and FSM 'independent,' since they are almost totally dependent on U.S. Compact dollars and enjoy visa privileges to work in the United States - which benefits, assuming they are not exploited by recruiters and end up indentured - many of their citizens, who, unfortunately, can't share in the wealth of a relative few - but they are 'sovereign.'

The only exception I saw to that general rule was that every person who gave the nationality "Catalan" (and there were quite a few) was placed in the Spanish category. :)
For Spanish pilgrims there is the mention of the autonomous regions. Cataluña is (still) one of them.o_O

One of the factors for the relatively large number of Canadians in proportion to US pilgrims is the popularity of the Camino in French Canada-- likely half if not a bit more of all Canadian pilgrims come from Québec-- the CCoP issued 1,300 credentials in 2015-- the highest number ever--, and the Association Québécoise likely about 1,500. The remaining 1,400 Canadians likely picked up generic credentials (or for one reason or the other were on Belgian or South African or US or Estonian credentials). Public religiosity (which is a really interesting differential between the two-- the most recent election was the first time since the 1950s when all three party leaders were known to be church-goers) is only a side-issue here. I have spoken with many Canadian pilgrims over the years and religious/spiritual motivations are very present, but rarely articulated.

Our 3 political leaders are church goers? I had no idea. I think part of the interest in the Camino in Quebec comes from the fact that 3 great walks start in France: Le Puy, Vezelay, Arles, and we speak French! Those guides have been around forever in our bookstores. Many will only walk those Caminos never crossing into Spain. And yes, many people of retired age are a product of a time when the Catholic Church had quite a firm grip on the Quebec population. I have been to a few presentations by pilgrims of different routes and have been surprised by the religious component of their pilgrimage. But then one has to remember that the 50s were not that long ago.

Speak French? Well, sort of:confused:. In our outback we have TV5 showing French Canadian films with ..... French undertitles. I often have a hard time understanding Québecois with their speak, which they call "French".:p
