HI all,

I will be starting my walk on March 31, taking the Valcarlos Route, and am having trouble getting in touch with the albergue in Valcarlos (tried email and what's app - no luck!). Does anyone have any suggestions for other places to stay in Valcarlos?

Also, wondering what the best weather app is for the region?

Lastly, is there ever any advance intel about whether or not the Napoleon Route will be opening on April 1? If I could be sure it would be open I might stick around in SJPP for one more night.

Thank you!

Meteoblue is a pretty good app for weather

The above info is the same as I have. I stayed there in October 23 and I was the only one staying on that particular day. It was difficult to find and a woman walked me through a parking area to a staircase that led to door of albergue. Also, it didn't look to be anywhere else available at the time to stay. I arrived later in the day and there was only one restaurant open for dinner. When I paid for the night's stay, Carlos didn't have change to give back to me. He said he would find me at the restaurant later, which he did. It all worked out but it felt odd for a first day. At that time of the year everyone had taken the Napoleon route.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Not sure if you understand that your plan is in the middle of Easter holiday. Valcarlos will be filled with celebration people on April 1st, and it may be difficult to find rooms/beds. The Napolion route will not be open on March 31.. I cannot understand why you have chosen the busiest time of Easter to start your camino: It will most likely be filled with Spanish folks. Book ahead. Soon.

Yes, I know about Easter. And I have my reasons for starting then. Thank you.

Yes, I have heard similar stories - thanks so much!

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

Thank you so much for the WhatsApp # and the weather app!

@HeartWriter if you go to gronze.com and navigate to Camino francés, you can see several accommodations in Valcarlos besides the albergue. You might try that if you can't reach the albergue. Personally I would just trust that you would be able to get a bed. If the albergue is full, you could take a taxi either forward to Roncesvalles and back again the next morning if you want to walk the entire route.

Lastly, is there ever any advance intel about whether or not the Napoleon Route will be opening on April 1? If I could be sure it would be open I might stick around in SJPP for one more night.
You mostly have to wait for the day to find out, but this weather forecast for the highest point on the Napoleon looks promising.

If you decide to wait and go via the Napoleon Route you will probably have to walk over to Roncesvalles in one day.

I always use the aemet app when I'm in Spain. It's linked to the Spanish national weather service. You can specify regions, municipalities, etc. I always felt it was reliable. The regular website is aemet.es.

I didn't bother to read what others said. But my best advice is to ask at the Pilgrim office when you get your credential about the weather. Then talk to the hospitalario or wherever you stay in Valcarlos, or any of the locals and they will give you the best weather information. I think better than any weather app. I have walked many caminos and found this to be true every time.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
