Hi.

The fire department of Tomar no longer provides accomodation, although many brouchures say the contrary. This is due to a reorganization of the fire department and the scaling up of the active staff of the department.

The council has the housing and accomodation for the pilgramage updated at www.cm-tomar.pt/index.php/pt/visitar-2/caminho-santiago

Thanks you for your understanding!

For anyone planning stages, this web page of the Tomar municipal government is quite complete.

I haven’t been on this caminho in years, but am happy to see that Hostel 2300 Thomar is still going strong! They were one of the first, along with Mario in Santarem (who sadly closed his hostel this year), who joined together to help pilgrims navigate what were then long stages from Lisbon north.

I still occasionally hear about pilgrims staying with the Bombeiros, but it seems to me like a good idea for us to find alternative lodging so that they can get on with their important work.

I believe there is an albergue supported by the Tomar-municipality government still in Asseiceira, just south of Tomar.

I suspect the local authorities in Tomar proper feel there is enough private tourist accommodation in the city to supply peregrinos as well as other visitors. The smaller locales have less other infrastructure; thus the support.

The various volunteer fire departments are having to cover a lot more responsibilities since the organizing/downloading of rural wildfire prevention and combat to them. I suspect use of their dormitories for pilgrim support will disappear, and other support venues--some public--will come into play.

Note the locally highly recommended bakery at the other end of Asseiceira, opening at 7 am and likely an excellent location for a peregrino breakfast!

Yes, there is an Alberque in Asseiceira which accepts bookings - unfortunately it was full the day I came through in May this year but I had a rest there before walking out to the hardware store on the highway where a couple of lovely gentlemen gave me a ride to the train station.

This is what happens when one individual had a good experience of some charity and then others that follow expect it.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

Absolutely! Before I retired, I was a firefighter for 23 years. If we had the opportunity, we often went beyond what “was expected” but always asked the recipient to not make it public because we didn’t want others to expect the same treatment from all crews of all departments across America. Times have changed, public services are strained by increased responsibilities and decreased budgets, and security concerns have changed everything. Sadly, this little bit of safety net is no longer.
