Lodging for over 1 night SJPDP?

I'd like to stay 2 nights in SJPDP and I know many of the places listed on Gronze etc are 1 night only.

I don't want to be required to evacuate the premises during the day on the 2nd day .

Just curious: How do you know this? I had a quick look and I see only three establishments that are listed as "for pilgrims only" which I take to mean that it is for 1 night only. The rest is labelled as "not only for pilgrims but oriented towards pilgrims" or has no such information at all. I'd say that you can stay longer than 1 night in the overwhelming majority of establishments in SJPP. It is not a town that caters mainly for pilgrims, it caters for hikers and tourists in general and it is a popular destination as such.

Where are you seeing this information?

Mostly on the websites of the establishments. However, I am also making an assumption based upon a general understanding that hostals/hostels/albergues. Etc are intended to be vacated during the day, say 0900 until check-in.perhaps I am incorrect? I have sent emails as well but have only recd a few responses.

You don't need to vacate most private accommodation during the day, including hostales (note that hostales are small hotels in Spain, often family run. They don't have dorms with bunk beds and each room has its own private bathroom), or often even private hostels. For a two night stay I'd opt for a private room somewhere.

But remember, hostales are only a specific lodging category in Spain.

I've booked similar accommodation in SJPdP via booking.com. This year at Gite Compostelle and a previous time at Gite Bidean. Both places have dorms rooms and private rooms.

Many of the private places in SJPDP allow 2 nights. Using booking .com is an easy way to find out - put in your desired dates and the ones who allow 2 night reservations will pop up! Just read through the house rules just in case there is something like a time you need to vacate - but SJPDP is one of the places that many people stay 2 nights because they are getting over jetlag.

We stayed 2 nights last August at Hotel Itzalpea. You don't have to vacate and come back later in the day. You cannot get in until 1600 on the day you arrive though.

Two places I'd recommend that I've both stayed in more than once and also for either two or three days at a time are the Hotel des Pyrenees (very comfortable with a good restaurant, but top end for SJPdP in terms of price) and the more budget friendly but also very good Villa Esponda. The important thing for me is aircon, which they both have, as I walk across the three hottest months of the year. Neither of these two places necessitate forced absence during the day.

Currently staying 2 nights at Gite Bidean in town centre. You can stay here in a private room or small dormitory and they offer dinner and breakfast. Just book ahead either by email or booking.com. Highly recommend! Buen Camino!

Try the San Martin Pineiro, ask for Pilgrims Rooms.. it also includes a full breakfast… no limit in number of nights.. right behind the Cathedral

That is where I always stay. But remember it is in Santiago no St. Jean

Gite Porte Saint Jacques let me stay more than one night with no need to vacate during the day. It is a few doors up from the pilgrim office. My only error was paying a premium via booking.com

I stayed 2 nights at Beilari so I could explore SJPDP. Love that town!!

We are currently in SJPP for 3 nights staying at Maison Bernat at 20 Rue de Citadel. Small but comfortable room with ensuite, all recently renovated, great staff, lounge area and terraced garden. Come or go as you please.

It is true that hostels around the world that cater to backpacking youth often have this requirement to leave during the day. But they don't have the 1-night only restriction.

The albergues along the Camino in Spain are intended as places for pilgrims to sleep while they walk steadily toward Santiago, so there is normally no reason for pilgrims to stay more than one night. So the 1-night-only practice for albergues has become is the norm. People are asked to leave in the morning so that the volunteers can prepare for the next influx. Occasionally a special arrangement will be made for someone who is sick or has another need.

In SJPP, there are establishments that serve different (but overlapping) markets - upscale tourists visiting that region of France, student backpackers from Europe, humble pilgrims en route from home in Europe, eager pilgrims from overseas who are starting their pilgrimage with jet lag, etc. The lodgings cater to different types, so there really isn't a general rule. But the 1-night-only restriction would probably not exist anywhere except the municipal albergue. The requirement to leave during the day might exist at some of the places with dorm beds and daily turnover, so that the staff can clean and prepare for the next group.
