We started in Villafranca de Bierzo today and have arrived in Vega Valcarce. We were surprised to spend the whole time on paved road or path. Is there any dirt camino between here and Santiago?

There is some - or at least there was in 2016 when I last walked the CF. But the Xunta have had a massive project of "improvement" of paths in recent years. Much of the route is now thoroughly manicured.

You may walk from Villafranca to O'Cebreiro via Ruta Dragonte. Most people would get off that and continue on CF Las Herrerias. Alternatively, you may walk from Villafranca via Paradela to the outskirts of Trabadelo. After O'Cebreiro, you're stuck on asphalt most of the time.
