Hi Meredith,

So that means there's a bus service covering for the 21:10 Sunday train?

Hi Meredith,

There is a bus service provided by the TER line 62 from the railroad station parking lot. The bus is scheduled instead of the 21:10 train through February 2. You buy the bus ticket at the train station; if you have a valid TER railroad ticket it is good for the bus.

There are NO reserved seats for either the TER train or the bus; seating is open as on a tram or metro. The cost to SJPdP from Bayonne is about 10 euros. SJPdP is the last stop; journey time roughly 1 1/2 hours. The TER train also transports bikes.

Dear Meredith,

Many thanks for the train information, it is really most kind of you and very thoughtful.
Having just booked my flight, I land in Biarritz @ 14:45 on Wednesday the 30th April 2014 (WOO HOO :-)
So, after the Bus transfer (do you know if the transfers are fairly regular?) from the Airport to Train Station I am right in thinking my train would be the 18:06?
Many thanks in advance
Blessings

Thanks very much Meredith, my sister and I arrive in Bayonne (from Sydney) on Tuesday April 29th and the 11.07 train the next day sounds good to me.

From Biarritz aeroport (Anglet) take a Chronopost bus to the BAYONNE rr station (Gare SNCF BAYONNE). For scheduled times see >> http://www.chronoplus.eu/ . Buses leave every 20 minutes throughout the day; travel time is roughly 45 minutes.

Dear Margaret, or anyone else who can help with French timetables,
We are flying from Paris to Biarritz on 1 May, which is Labour Day and a public holiday in France. We arrive in Biarritz airport at 15.50pm. Am I right in thinking that buses and trains are more limited because of the public holiday, which means we will need to take the bus from Biarritz to Bayonne leaving at 17.00pm and arriving in Bayonne at 17.51pm, and then need to take the last train to SJPdP at 21.10pm? It looks like with our flight arrival time, these are the only options for us - later than I had hoped to arrive at SJPdP. I've looked at timetables and this looks to be the case. Am I right?

Margaret, thank you so much for all your helpful advice. You are incredibly patient and a wealth of information (so I apologise for another question on the same topic!)
With best wishes,
Helen.

Helen,

Yes that appears to be the case. If you do NOT have a reservation now in SJPdP perhaps you might consider staying in Bayonne over night and taking an early morning train on May 2 to SJPdP. The Monte Carlo in Bayonne is a good inexpensive choice and it faces the train station.

Thank you Margaret. We have booked a room in SJPdP in anticipation of it being a public holiday and so thinking it is likely to be busy. Unfortunately I should have checked train and bus times first.

Merci et bon chemin.

Helen,

Glad that you have a reservation! You might email the place and tell them that you will arrive close to 23:00 and to definitely hold that reservation for you.

Does anyone know if the bus station and the train station in Bayonne are in close proximity to each other. We arrive by bus and wold like to catch the 11:o0 train to SJPP but have only 40 minutes. Can we make it?

The buses are just outside the train station - can not miss it.

The buses are just outside the train station - can not miss it.

The present discussion is about buses replacing trains running from Bayonne to SJPdP.
These REPLACEMENT buses DO leave from the train station lot as jirit states.

However if you are taking the bus from the Biarritz airport to Bayonne to get the train make sure that the bus is marked Bayonne Gare (ie railroad station) and not just Bayonne.

There is no central bus station in Bayonne. Different bus companies have bus stops at different locations. Some have a stop at Gare Bayonne but most don't.

You need to know where your bus stop is.

Place de Basques is used as a bus stop by several bus companies. Its located about 1 km and across the river from the train station.

You'll likely need to use a local bus or a taxi to get to the train station.

Chronoplus is the local bus network.
http://www.chronoplus.eu/

Even if you decide to walk ... 40 minutes is enough time to get from downtown Bayonne to Gare de Bayonne.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Hi,

I leave for the Camino at the start of June. I need a little more help with the trip from Biarritz to SJPDP. Could someone confirm I have the following correct

1. Land Biarritz
2. Catch Chronoplus bus line 14

http://www.chronoplus.eu/horaires_l...=51&sens=2&date=07/06/2014&heure=13&minute=45
I'll be catching the bus from 'Anglet Aeroport' to 'Bayonne Gare'... Are these locations correct?
3. Get on an SNCF train to SJPDP - LIGNE 62
NOW I need to work out the following
Is this the correct page to book train tickets (I know you're not guaranteed a seat) and will the tickets booked here work on the buses due to line work?
http://www.voyages-sncf.com/billet-train/resultat?hid=CTG

According to whariwharangi on this board http://www.caminodesantiago.me/comm...iarritz-airport-to-st-jean-pied-de-por.10552/ (last post)
this
http://telechargement.ter-sncf.com/...ion/62-AFFICHE-2013_25_11_13_tcm-11-67795.pdf
is the timetable for the trains. With my limited knowledge of the French language I note there are 2 different timetables for Sundays (the day I'm heading to SJPDP) and one for everyday. Can someone confirm that the times of 7:14, 14:55 & 21:10 are the only times for the trains from Bayonne to SJPDP???

SOOOOOOOO using the Chronoplus timetable (changing times at the top of the page on the link below)
http://www.chronoplus.eu/horaires_l...=51&sens=2&date=07/06/2014&heure=13&minute=45

If I needed to catch the

7:14 train I need to be on a bus the night before
14:55 train I need to be on the 13:50 bus at the latest
21:10 train I need to be on the 20:12 bus at the latest

I have got this right?????

Danielle, the limited information in your question makes it hard to answer it in full. You have made the correct assumption regarding the service from the Bayonne train station to SJPdP on Sundays. The rest of the answer depends on what time you arrive at the airport? The airport is small and so there is not a lot of hassle getting from the plane, picking up your luggage and walking curbside to where the bus stops, the Chronoplus website will help you figure out when you will arrive at the train station. Assuming the 40 minute ride from airport to train station I would give myself more than a hour, I was at the train station several weeks ago and it is crawling with pilgrims waiting for transportation and the tickets are sold on a first come, first serve basis. If you have a late arriving flight I'd definitely consider spending the night in Bayonne and catch the early train which probably means you will now be looking at the Lundi train schedule.

Danielle,

Everything you state appears to be correct.

If the substitute bus is being used a pre-booked train ticket would be valid for it. All TER ligne 62 train tickets are valid for 60 days from date stamped on ticket.

Bon Voyage and Buen Camino,

Margaret Meredith

Thanks a million biarritzdon, mspath and whariwharangi you brilliant people!!! Biarritzdon I get in at 12:55 to Biarritz....do you think I would make it to the 13:20 bus or at least the 13:55 one????

If your flight is on time it should not be an issue catching either bus. Make sure you have a one euro coin in your hand to pay the bus fare, they get very cranky about making change.
Worse case there are normally taxis waiting in front of the terminal and for something like 20euros you could probably get to the train station in about 15 minutes. Just make sure you tell them you want to go to the Bayonne Gare.

Hi Danielle - just be aware that there were heavy rains in March which led to an avalanche which has blocked the line between Bayonne and SJPP. There is currently a replacement bus running between Bayonne and SJPP, which takes 85 minutes (prior to the avalanche the train took 80 minutes to get from Bayonne to SJPP, so it's not a significant difference in the trip time). Here is a link to the timetable for the replacement bus:

Buen Camino!

Does anybody know when the TER trains resume their service to SJPdP? Two of us are arriving 20th June with bicycles. I would assume getting the bicycles on the replacement buses will not be possible. Any other transport options to get to SJPdP? It appears the distance between Bayonne and SJPdP is about 52km, does anybody know how cycleable is this journey?

It appears bicycles can go on TER trains without dismantle + packing:

http://www.bikes.sncf.com/your-bike...-bike-into-france/ter-and-sightseeing-trains/

... fingers crossed ... :-)

Try using google earth for route recce. I touched down virtually in two spots and found road shoulders and markings that are suggestive of bike lanes.

Otherwise ... I would suggest contacting SNCF to ask them about taking bikes on buses.

Thank you , that is good news. The Basque country is mountainous, which is a concern . Indications appear there are currently no work on ligne 62 between Bayonne and SJPdP, hope this is the actual situation:

Unfortunately another page, Situations Perturbéés or Upset Situations of that same TER notice link still reads

Dernière mise à jour le :27/05/2014 à 10:17

Bayonne - St Jean Pied de Port : Suite aux fortes pluies, un éboulement interrompt la circulation des trains jusqu’à nouvel avis. Un service de substitution par bus est mis en place.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Gemsbokkie, but the 'State of traffic' page on the TER Aquitaine website (last updated on 27 May) says that the replacement bus service is still running on ligne 62. The page also states that this will be the case 'jusqu’à nouvel avis' (until further notice) so they are not giving any clear indication of when this situation will change.

Adhemar78 + mspath thank you kindly for clearing things up. We are actually flying from Schiphol Amsterdam to Bordeaux (with bicycles), then hoping to take the TER (TER allow bicycles onboard) train service down to Bayonne. Have also received email from SCNF indicationg TER only allow bicycles onboard if correctly dismantled and packed (inside bag measuring no greater than 90X120cm) which is not clear on the website.

Will have to give this more thought and search for solutions... Suggestions will be most welcome.

Gembokkie,

I am confused with what SNCF said. Could you please send me as PM/Conversation a copy of their email. Perhaps your bike needs to be packaged only because of the autocar substitute service from Bayonne to SJPdP having limited space. If so one solution for you would be to bike from Bayonne to SJPdP

On the current TER Aquitaine web this statement appears re bikes.

Hi Margaret,

Thank you for the link. PM sent.

Perhaps to dismantle and fit bicycle into cycle bag may be the only option available to travel on the replacement bus service from Bayonne to SJPdP.

The F3 television station reported on 3 June during their evening regional broadcast that the train service will not be back in service until October and for the time being only bus service will be provided by SNCF. The rest of the report dealt with "toute le monde est en colere."

Most helpful...have just checked into hotel in Bayonne as there were no trains to st jean when I got here at 8.30pm. Will catch the 7.45am tomorrow Tuesday.
Thanks again.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

The train tickets that you have will be valid for the substitute bus running on the same day at the same time.

Think about it in terms of paying for passage from Bayonne to SJPdP. Its up to SNCF to get you to your destination and its up to them what (reasonable) means of transport they will use. In this case its bus because the train is out of order.

Have since found someone doing run between Bayonne and SJPdP. This may help if you are lugging with you a bicycle to do the Camino on. The replacement bus service may prefer your bicycle all packed and taped up:

I found this link from a thread on this website somewhere. It escapes me the name of the thread though.

Good one.

The question to anyone who has used Express Bourricot is whether their taxi is capable of hauling bicycles.

Having emailed Caroline at the email address on the website she confirmed it absolutely possible to haul bicycles from Bayonne to SJPdP sans front wheel though. She is quite responsive to confirm requests/prices and such. There is also a mobile number provided.

Thank you for the link, have just emailed her through the website...
A direct transfer from Biarritz to SJPdP would be good... getting to Bayonne, then train to Cambo Les Bains, then bus to the end is a bit of an ordeal as we will have our 9 1/2 month old with us!

Any recommendations for Private accommodation in SJPdP?

I've booked two nights at a hotel called Itzalpea near the train station for the start of my Camino in September:
http://www.maisondhotes-itzalpea.com/

I made the booking via the Booking.com website.

It looks nice, but is already full for the days we want... Apparently 56% is booked according to booking.com... Does that mean it is average or busy?

I am not sure; I know when I booked Itzalpea for my dates there were only one or two rooms left, and I booked six months in advance. So perhaps it does fill up a long time in advance. Having said that, I suspect that Booking.com would not have all Itzalpea's rooms on their website. It may be worth contacting Itzalpea directly to see if there are any rooms left for the dates you wanted. Here's their website:
http://www.maisondhotes-itzalpea.com/

And here's their email address. I emailed them yesterday with an enquiry about my booking and they responded within a couple of hours:
itzalpea@wanadoo.fr

Forgot to qualify the 56%. Booking.com reckon that percentage of all the rooms in SJPdP are booked...
