Hi all! Do you know if I can wear my hiking sandals as shower shoes or do I need to have a specific pair of flip flops that are shower only for albergues?

Thanks!

Some albergues ask you to leave your walking shoes at the door and to use something else within the albergue.

I always carry a pair of Jandals (flip flops for non Kiwis).

either you don't need anything or you can use flip flops or sandals...I used my Keen sandals and was just fine (I didn't bring flip flops)

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).
I go barefoot in the showers. I'm not sure how much protection a couple of mm of rubber gives you when you are standing in a pool of water in a slow draining shower.
On this year's and last year's Caminos I used SportSlick on my feet every day as part of my anti-blister regimen. It has the added benefit of containing an anti-fungal ingredient.

I brought a pair a Crocs to use as evening/albergue shoes because I walked in cold weather but ended up buying a pair of flipflops from a tienda china after a couple of days. I found it worth carrying separate shower shoes.

Whatever shoes you wear to hike regularly in should not be used in the shower - they are usually pretty dirty and most albergues don't even want you entering the dorm area with them (often have a shelf to put them on when you walk in the building). That said - I bring an evening shoe that can be used to hike in and/or shower in as needed. For me - that is either Tevas or Xero sandals. Normally - I get to the albergue early when the showers are cleaner - so I don't always wear them in the shower. But I do if I feel the need to.

I shower with naked feet but right outside the shower door or curtain are my Birkenstock foam sandals. They usually get wet from splashes under the door or curtain. They dry easily. They are super light and serve as my evening about town wear (with socks). I have not contacted "athletes" foot in any of scores of albergues. Buen Camino
