RIP Maria Nieves Panizo Benevente - Rabanal del Camino

Time of past OR future Camino
2006 to date: Over 21 Caminos. See signature line
Since our earliest Caminos, Joe and I have stayed with the wonderful Benevente family at El Refugio Hosteria in Rabanal del Camino. Cristina and Antonio have always been so kind to us as pilgrims. Their sister, Pilar, has been serving as chef the past few years. The whole family just works so hard and Joe and I love them very much.

This morning I got a message from Cristina that their mother, Nieves, passed away on Sunday.

Just thought some of you might have stayed there and would like to know.

If any of you happen to be doing a winter Camino and pass by, please give them our love and our condolences.

Ideal pocket guides for during and after your Camino. Each weighs just 40g (1.4 oz).
Sorry for their loss.
I would love to send a card or flowers, but am at a loss as to how to do it from Oregon in the USA.
Your location doesn’t matter. If you Google ‘enviar flores a domicilio españa’ or similar, there are loads of results for Spanish websites where you can order online and they will deliver it to any address and you’ll be able to add a personalized message if you like.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

I stayed in their private quarters on my 1st Camino in 2012, as Refugio Gaucelmo refused me entrance. She looked after me, my left leg was injured and she pampered me and made sure I was ok. Forever grateful. RIP.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Very light, comfortable and compressible poncho. Specially designed for protection against water for any activity.

Our Atmospheric H30 poncho offers lightness and waterproofness. Easily compressible and made with our Waterproof fabric, its heat-sealed interior seams guarantee its waterproofness. Includes carrying bag.

Rabanal del Camino is one of my favourite stops on the Camino Frances, and I have always stayed at El Refugio. My condolences to the Benevente family. 🚶‍♂️
