I have not heard this but I am interested because I would like to attend mass on Monday evening. Where do I go to get a pass?
Last September, i heard they were handing some but they don't promote them. You just ask for a pass when you get your compostela and if they still have some, they'll give you one, but only one. Special section, front row. Botafumeiro swung for me last time... Magical. 😊

Hey guys!
I'm set to arrive in sdc Sunday. Do you guys know if the pilgrim office is still handling passes for mass?
No pas needed.
When the gard says it's full no one can enter anymore.
There are 4 Masses a day ,
07,30 , 09,30 , 12,00 and 19,30.

We went several times the last weeks, entered the Cathedral about 45 minutes before sit down and enjoy. 🙏🏻

You need a pass?
Seriously?
Last year, due to Covid-19 restrictions, the number of places was very heavily restricted. I think only about 300 people could participate at mass and they were seated on chairs, separated from each other. That’s when the Pilgrim Office handed out a few passes every day. I believe that this is no longer done.

This year, the benches are back. I’ve watched the live stream a few times in recent days. Sometimes, the congregation is so large that people are standing in the transept and along the walls and the guard announces that they should leave a passage open between them and at other times the benches in the transept are more than half empty. The 12:00 and 19:30 pilgrim mass are a lot more popular than the 7:30 and 9:30 pilgrim mass.

Pilgrim Mass today, Holy Year 2022, Friday, May 20, at 9:30. Many empty seats.
And since this is always of interest to many: The botafumeiro did swing at this 9:30 pilgrim mass. And there is no guarantee that it will swing later today at the more frequented masses at noon and in the evening.

some and then more. see my signature.
I have heard that they read out the names of the pilgrims who have received their compostella. Can anyone tell me, is it on the next mass after you receive it, or at a particular mass time of day?

No names. Just nationalities.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

When I was there they would say the countries of the pilgrim but not each individual name. I'm not sure how they could know apart from the passes that were given at the office.

As others have already said, only nationalities and now and then a few departure towns or regions but it strikes me to be a bit haphazard. I don't think that you would even be able to know whether you are included in such a group or not. It does give you an idea of how global or universal the pilgrim population is.

Makes a lot of sense. I'm guessing they're just listing the countries that arrived on that specific they whether or not these pilgrims attend.

Yes I got a "special" pass last December for the mass. I am not sure why they gave it out then as there were very few pilgrims. I think they sectioned off the first 2 or three rows.

Hello. I hope I'm asking this in the right place. I arrive in SdeC on Sunday May 22nd from SJPP. Amazing! I really want to attend the 12 noon pilgrim Mass. Are hiking poles and backpacks allowed in the Cathedral? I send a bag ahead so my pack is small. The poles have served me well and I'd really like to have them the last day. I won't have time to drop anything off at my room before mass. Will I get in, if capacity not already reached? Even collapsed, the poles will stick out of my bag. Thanks for advice!

I dropped my bag at hotel but saw people with small rucksacks at the mass. Not sure about poles.

Many, various, and continuing.
Just for the record: the four Meseta Camino parishes before Sahagun --- Ledigos, Terradillos de los Templarios, Moratinos, and San Nicolas del Real Camino -- are starting up Pilgrim Masses in a series of evenings, timed so the passing summertime pilgrims can attend before dinnertime.
It will be a roll of the dice -- but so far it looks like San Nicolas on Tuesday, Terradillos Wednesday, Moratinos Thursday, and Ledigos Friday. Got that?
The parish priest is right out of seminary and loves to sing the responses. He doesn't speak English, but pilgs who luck into a Misa hereabouts will love it anyway.

Thanks, J Willhaus!
The noon mass may not work. No point introducing stress after an incredible journey. The evening mass seems a better plan.

That's wonderful! We've met a couple of priests who have parishes on the Camino and they have said what a honor and a responsibility it is for them to care for their regular parishioners as well as pilgrims.

When I volunteered at the pilgrims office last summer, we were to note down the nationalities of the pilgrims that asked about mass times and then note which mass they planned to attend. Someone came by and collected the info periodically. Unless you mentioned it while you were getting your Compostela, your nationality wasn’t announced.

Oh, thank you, these announcements at the Pilgrim Mass make sense to me now. Also, pilgrims better brush up on their Spanish ☺️, otherwise they may miss it when they are included in an announcement: Reino Unido is the UK, Estados Unidos is the USA and desde San Juan de Pie de Puerto is that town in France at the foot of the Pyrenees where they may have started their Camino de Santiago.

Today in the Cathedral all backpacks were allowed at the Pilgrims Mass and folded walking sticks. Everyone in our group was allowed to take their backpacks in and I was surprised to see quite large backpacks were allowed

Just a thought. I hope this isn't too controversial.

If you only want to go to the Pilgrim Mass in SdC but skip it in other towns, you may need to re-think why you want to go to Mass in the first place. Make sure you are going with the "right" reason in your heart, of course - who am I to judge?

As Rebekah confirmed in #29, there are lots of other pilgrim Masses being offered along the way. If you are in the right place at the right time, go to Mass. If a friend asked you to stop by on your way and have a cup of coffee, you would (even if you didn't drink coffee). This is God inviting you in for a quick hello on your way.

Please don't make the chance to photograph the Butafumeria the only reason you want to go to Mass.

That said, I was drawn to Mass several times when I arrived in SdC over the years, even took videos of the Butafermeria several times, since it swung at all but one of the Masses I attended, so I know and understand the feeling.

Love going to church every time I am able including sometimes every day when working at some albergues. I am not Catholic, but still like to go receive a blessing. People on the Camino are proud of their churches, no matter the size and are eager to welcome you.
