Monasteries on the Norte

I'm gathering info, but a lot of it is outdated. I'd love to know of any monasteries on the Norte where pilgrims can stay, or even where we can hear Matins, Vespers, Compline - if the brothers sing. Are there any convents? I have written to the monastery at Zenarrusa to find out if it is possible to reserve there in advance. Other places?

There are quite a few places; here are just a few I know of. In Zarautz, the Carmelite sisters: www.carmelitasdescalzasbuenpastor.es/horarios/ --no sign of an albergue ; the Cistercian monks of Abbey of Vicaceli in Cobrecese (with albergue-- service times at www.monasterioviaceli.com/comunidad1/oficiodivino), 7.5km east of Comillas; the Cistercian monks in Sobrado de Monxes in Galicia, which has an albergue;

Sobrado de Monxes gets a big tick from me. You can either stay in the albergue (which looks like it has been updated since I was there) or in the guesthouse for a longer stay.

The abbey albergue in Cóbreces has been closed for a few years now, unfortunately. Still hoping it comes back sometime. They do offer private rooms. The same is true for Zenarruza, incidentally--you can't reserve a bed in the albergue in advance, but you can book a private room.

It's been really tough post-COVID to get clarity on some spots. Lots of places listed as "closed temporarily" that just faded away.

And occasionally, a closed place comes back. The albergue at the monastery in San Salvador de Valdediós is one of those--it reopened this past summer. It's not on the Norte, but it's just off of it, on the connecting route to the Primitivo, and it's easy to double back to the Norte from there.

And occasionally, a closed place comes back. The albergue at the monastery in San Salvador de Valdediós is one of those--it reopened this past summer. It's not on the Norte, but it's just off of it, on the connecting route to the Primitivo, and it's easy to double back to the Norte from there.

Excellent - thanks! Yes, I was going to dip down to Oviedo then....not sure. Back to Norte and Ingles.....?

Hi, I did the Norte in 2022, & one of the highlights was staying g st Sobrado dos monies, as previous stated, the albergue there has been totally refurbished & is very clean, comfortable & calm, with good washing machines ect, the head abbot is a fellow English man & is one of the nicest people I met on the "way"

The Convent in Laredo was a most memorable stop for us. Notable because of the hospitality, singing, pilgrim service, and communal meal. The sisters prepared soup and bread. While the pilgrims went into town to purchase food to share. Afterwards, we all cleaned the dining room. It was great.
