Johnny - my Spanish teacher, Reinette Novoa, and I have written the book.

We found that most Spanish Words and Phrase books are for tourists or travellers, with lots of stuff that a Camino pilgrim will not need - like "I need to send my suit to the laundry" or "Where can I have my car serviced?" or "Do you have room service?"

When I started Spanish classes with her I found that I was spending hours on verb conjugations, rules on grammar, gender, diphthongs etc. I told her that all I really wanted was to be able to get by on the Camino and she suggested that each week I give her a list of words and phrases in English and she would give me the Spanish and simple pronunciations to learn.

These were so useful and easy to learn that I suggested she compile them into a book. So we worked on the book, in order of a pilgrim's experience; learning all the polite words (and not so polite words!), packing the backpack, flying to Spain, arriving and asking questions, getting to the start. Booking into accommodation - hotel or albergue - washing clothes, eating (with a full menu reader as an appendix), shopping, sightseeing. Walking on the trail, words for cyclists, making friends, money, post office, bank and arriving in Santiago.

One appendix has the 'Oraciones' - SIGNO DE LA CRUZ, EL GLORIA,EL CREDO, AVE MARÍA etc etc etc. The booklet will be smaller than A5, shouldn't weigh much and can be folded into a pocket if ncessary.

The book will be published by Pilgrimage Publications (who also published YOUR CAMINO) and will be available in print and ebook form.

Hi Tony,
There was a delay with the printer's proof so it has gone back to them with corrections. I am hoping that it will be available in a couple of weeks.

I think this is an excellent addition to the literature which can assist pilgrims. I tried to include a page on language/wayfinding in the latest guide to the Camino Ingles - but guides should be shorter rather than longer. In terms of pronunciation would you think about a CD or an online tutorial?

Phsew! We are not so sophisticated and haven't thought as far as a CD.

The layout is very simple - three columns: English word - Spanish word in Bold - pronunciation in italics.
We have only included words and phrases relevant to the Camino and Reinette says in the book that if you struggle with the word, just point it out to a Spanish speaking person (especially under the medical section).

April (2013)
This sounds like a very helpful resource! I have been looking for something like this for my upcoming (April) trip. I checked, however, and could not find it available in digital format. I plan to travel with a Kindle reader. Will it soon be in digital? Thanks!

If this is not available, does anyone know of a pdf file of useful words/phrases? Has anyone compiled a comprehensive list of all those suggestions found in this Forum? Thanks!

Without even high school Spanish, I worried about my lack of language. I downloaded the Kindle version of Camino lingo and found it very useful. I wasn't able to discuss Proust but I could eat, make reservations and ask directions. Even managed to buy very nice shoes inPamplona.

The ebook specifies that each page is a pdf, visualized in same size as the book pages. Does this mean on the iphone we have to scroll sideways to read the lines?

The easiest way to test any ebook on how it performs on any device is to download the free sample first, read it and then make your buying decision ;-) Buen Camino, SY
