It's a bit embarrassing to ask, but has anyone here experience with a very (!) late night arrival in Bayonne?

I could buy a very cheap ticket to get there which would be my only chance to walk at least a week on the Francés this year, but I would arrive in Bayonne at 1:30 am 😬.

Hotel with 24h check-in or similar is not an option because of low budget, I would have to stay at the train station or something like that until the departure of the first train to St. Jean.

Has anyone experience of spending the night at the train station, or maybe you know a bar that is still open that time of the night?

No problem or not a good idea for a tired pilgrim spending the night out in the open there?

I know Bayonne (have been there several times) and think it should be fine, but if someone else has done the same and lived to tell the tale it would be reassuring 😂.

Thanks in advance for any advice or opinions.

Formule 1 any use?
15 minutes by taxi from the airport
6 minutes from Bayonne station or 30 minutes walk
Thank you. Current price is 44€ if my research is correct. Not much, but with that price it would still be cheaper to take the more expensive bus that arrives at noon. But it is always good to know more options :)

You are welcome. You do get some sleep and a shower that way. Buen Camino, in any case!

Hi @good_old_shoes I don't know if this will be possible - but there is the Refuge Saint Jacques not far from the cathedrdal in Bayonne. We received a very warm welcome there in May. It's a small, modern, clean and comfortable gite with 14 beds.

They do take reservations. Usually pilgrims are asked to arrive by 10pm - but if you were to contact them in advance they may be able to help you in the circumstances. Sometimes, the volunteer hospitaleros sleep on site.

In earlier threads there was this contact information.

@Monasp said this
‘You can call the hostel on +33 5 59 25 71 33. We take reservations by phone. The person who answers speaks very good English.’

And another forum member received a prompt reply by using this email. caminopa@hotmail.com and identifying which gite as they take care of a few.

Wishing you all the best.

Thank you. I've heard good things about the gite in Bayonne, but I don't think I would want to bother them with an arrival in the middle of the night... occupying a room or bed for only a few hours seems like a waste of ressources also.

I think I would be fine waiting a few hours at night at the train station until the first train departs. It would just be good to hear from others who have done that before (is the train station even open at night? That kind of information would be especially helpful!).

Alright. I remember some kind of concrete blocks/benches not far from the station that would be fine for taking a nap... maybe that's what I will do until the station opens :)

It's a bit embarrassing to ask, but has anyone here experience with a very (!) late night arrival in Bayonne?

Check out the youth hostel: Hostel20 - 8 rue Sainte Catherine Bayonne (next to the station)

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.

The station is not open all night. Attached is a peak of the opening hours. Yes, there are concrete blocks out front but I would be worried about my safety. I am currently staying at Hostel 20 Bayonne. If they have a night watchman you could ask about sleeping a few hours for a few euros.
