Thank you for these details. I started my Via Francigena last fall in Lucca; such a beautiful city!
I am half Italian on my father's side. His parents came to the US from Sicily for a better life and they lived in an all Italian neighborhood, so their English left a lot to be desired and I never understood them very well. My father never spoke Italian except when we visited his parents and he was definitely fluent. I regret never having him teach me anything. My maiden name was Fontana.
I hope you don't mind that I got sidetracked...
I remember seeing your posts about the Via Francigena. Along with the via Francesco, it's definitely on my bucket list. There's just no place as beautiful and as full of art and culture as Italy.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Starting April 7, 2022 from Pamplona. I started off my day waking up in the Hostal Bearan, which is a modern and comfortable space if a little thin walled.

After getting some equipment together I left and briefly looked around Pamplona. This being my first Camino, my eyes welled up with tears first time a Spanish woman said “Buen Camino“ to me.

The original plan was to only hike to Cizur Menor or Zaroquigui as a warm up first day. But unfortunately there wasn’t an Albergue open until Uterga.

Albergue Casa Baztan was fine, if not luxurious. But unfortunately I woke up with a lot of pain in my shin, which I found out later was probably an anterior shin splint. That’s an ongoing problem and I posted another thread about that seeking advice.

On the next day, I decided to just do a short hike to Puenta la Reina. I ended up staying at Albergue Estrella Guia after I saw a review from @alexwalker in the Wise pilgrim Camino France app.

And I did do some sketches. Of the Iglesia Crucifijo and the old Roman bridge in Puenta La Reina. Both Watercolor and ink on paper, 6 x 9” or 15 x 22cm.

Nearly two years after your thread, though better late than never.

I feel these paintings are far better than the photographs of the original sites.
There is so much more depth and life in them.

I’ll look through the rest now.

Lovely work, @Stephan the Painter!!

That’s a timely bump because luckily for him (and maybe us), Stephan is back in Spain as we speak and hopefully some more paintings are coming! No pressure though!

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

Here is a pic from 2016, I love the simplicity of the sketch map and directions "1 km climb up, 5km flat, 5km down". I wonder how the prices are now?
