Irun/Hendaye

Irun is a Spanish city on the border with Hendaye France. Its an important location because there are only four places where there are railroad connections between Spain and France and this is one of them.

The railroad gauges and train voltage requirements used in Spain are different from those in France. A transfer is needed for any rail traffic that crosses the border.

This post describes travel options from Biarritz airport BIQ (France) to Pamplona.

Executive Summary

The Biarritz airport site indicates ALSA, through its subsidiary CONDA, provides service from Biarritz airport to Pamplona via San Sebastian several times daily. This is a new service and the schedule keeps changing (March 2015)

Otherwise, travel from Biarritz to Irun or San Sebastian/Donostia via Hendaye for more frequent service options. Probably the most viable options (depending on timings) are:

Take C bus to Gare Biarritz. Take SNCF train to Hendaye or Irun (TER terminates Hendaye TGV terminates Irun). Take Donostialdea Metro to San Sebastian. Take ALSA bus from San Sebastian to Pamplona.

Discussion

There is infrequent direct bus service from Biarritz to Pamplona.

There is frequent bus and train service from Biarritz to Hendaye and Irun.

Irun to Pamplona

La Burundesa provides bus service from Irun Renfe Station to Pamplona once daily. You can use ALSA site for schedule; or,

Renfe operates trains from Irun to Pamplona.

Bilbao to SJPdP

Bizkaia buses #A3247 travels from Bilbao airport to Bilbao Termibus where it terminates. Termibus is located in same area as San Mames station.

Take Metro from San Mames to Etxebarri Station or take Euskotren tram to Atxuri Station.

Euskotren commuter trains travel from Atxuri Station and Etxebarri Station to Hendaia station, co-located with SNCF Gare d'Hendaye France, where Euskotren tracks terminate. A transfer is required at San Sebastian Euskotren Amara station.

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
Some updates/corrections/extra info:

Renfe connects with SNCF at Irun/Hendaye and Port Bou/Cerbère where there is break of gauge.

...and at Lator de Querol-Enveig (Latour-de-Carol-Enveitg in French).

CP operates trains from Lisboa and Porto Portugal terminating in Madrid and in Hendaye France.

Out of Porto, the train isn't direct (you need to change trains in Coimbra-B).

1663 Bilbao to Bayonne Bus Option

There are PESA buses twice daily (except Sunday) from Bilbao Termibus to Place de Basques Bayonne.

Alsa has buses from Bilbao to Bayonne too. Take a look at the web of Alsa for info about schedules and fares. I don't know where within Bayonne stop the Alsa buses though.

SNCF TGV and Intercites trains travel from Irun Renfe Station to Gare de Bayonne.

French trains travel to Irún but not out of Irún. On the other hand, Spanish trains travel to Hendaye but not out of Hendaye. Therefore, to go from Irún to Bayonne by train, you need to change in Hendaye.

Barcelona is connected by Renfe to border crossings at Irun/Hendaye and Port Bou/Cerbère where there is break of gauge connections to the SNCF rail system in France.

...and to Lator de Querol-Enveig.

Renfe and SNCF have recently started rail service direct from Barcelona to Paris.

...and to Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse and some in-between stations.

There are several bus stations in Madrid. I've listed four. There likely are other stations that I'm not aware of at time of writing.

You should add Plaza Elíptica; the departure point of buses to Toledo.

Factors:

a. Closest Airport to SJPdP is Biarritz.

b. The closest airport to SJPdP in Spain is San Sebastian, which is 3 km from Irun/Hendaye border crossing and rail service provided by SNCF and Renfe.

c. SJPdP has SNCF train/bus service to Bayonne.

d. SJPdP has seasonal CONDA (ALSA) bus service to Pamplona.

e. There is Transports64 Regional bus service from SJPdP to Pau. Pau has a regional airport.

f. Consider how you will get home from Santiago.

A. If I were traveling from Biarritz to SJPdP I would:

a. Take Chronoplus bus 14 from Biarritz airport to Gare Bayonne.

b. Take SNCF TER 62 train/autocar service from Bayonne to SJPdP.

B. If I were traveling to SJPdP by way of Paris (or Bordeaux) I would:

a. Determine if it was cost effective and time effective to fly from Paris to Biarritz. Time effective means arriving in time to catch a train from Bayonne to SJPdP on the same day. (Allow 4 - 5 hours to transfer from CDG flight arrival to Orly flight departure)

b. If arriving at CDG and taking the train is the better option ... take the train from CDG 2 to Bayonne if the schedule is viable.

c. If CDG 2 schedule doesn't work ... Take RER B train to St Michel and transfer to the Metro. Take the line 4 Metro to Montparnasse. Then board the TGV train originating from Montparnasse to Bayonne. There is more frequent service from Montparnasse.

d. If arriving at Orly ... take the Orly Val train to station Antony and RER train to Massy. Take TGV from Massy to Bayonne.

C. If I were traveling to SJPdP by way of Madrid I would:

a. Take the Metro (from either T1T2T3 or from t4) or Renfe Cercanias (from T4) to Puerta Atocha and take a Renfe train to Pamplona.

b. Or ALSA provides bus service from Madrid T4 airport to Pamplona via Soria or Zaragosa. Bus service is slower than the train however it runs frequently, is cheaper, and requires no knowledge of Madrid transportation systems.

c. CONDA provides (seasonal) bus service to SJPdP - See ALSA schedule - from the Pamplona bus station.

d. I would consider a flight from Madrid to either Pamplona or San Sebastian.

D. If I were traveling to SJPdP by way of London (Dublin would work too) I would:

a. Tranfer from arrival airport (Probably Heathrow or Gatwick) by National Express bus to either Stansted (Ryan air has flights to Biarritz all year) or Gatwick (Easy Jet has summer flights to Biarritz).

b. Fly from Stansted or Gatwick (or Dublin) to Biarritz France.

c. Take SNCF train and bus service to SJPdP.

E. If I were traveling to SJPdP by way of Barcelona I would:

a. Take Barcelona Cercanias to Barcelona Sants station.

b. Take either Renfe train or ViBasa (Monbus) bus from Barcelona Sants to Pamplona.

c. Take CONDA bus from Pamplona to SJPdP.

d. I would consider a flight from Barcelona to San Sebastian.

F. If I were traveling to SJPdP by way of Bilbao I would:

a. Take PESA bus from Bilbao (Loiu) airport to San Sebastian.

b. Take PESA or ALSA bus from San Sebastian to Bayonne. ALSA buses go to Gare Bayonne (TGV Bayonne)

c. Take SNCF train and bus service from Bayonne to SJPdP.

G. If I were traveling to SJPdP by way of Lisboa (or Porto) I would:

a. Take CP overnight train from Lisboa to Hendaye France.

b. Take SNCF train from Hendaye to Bayonne.

c. Take SNCF TER 62 service to SJPdP.

These are but a few of the options.

Regardless of whichever city you choose to arrive in ... it will take a full day of travel to get to SJPdP.

Hello whariwharang,

I've read through all your helpful links. However, I would appreciate your help if you don't mind.
I'm looking for transportation (either bus or train) between Burgos and santiago on June 9 , 2015. I have not been able to find a train. I followed your link to the alsa bus which leaves Burgos at 4:25 am getting to Lugo at 10am, then lugo to santiago arriving in santiago at 4:00pm. As far as I can see, this is the only way and time to get to santiago from Burgos. Would you be so kind to confirm that???? I would very much appreciate it.

Regards,
Linda

Linda2232, you aren't seeing a schedule for June 9th on the web of RENFE because that date is around the early/mid June yearly schedule change for trains. Probably, you'll have to wait till May to see a schedule for your travel date but it's (almost) sure there'll be a direct train running from Burgos to Santiago de Compostela on your travel date.
