Hola Peregrinos,
I will be walking the Camino del Norte and Primitivo this fall; and am considering downloading the Wise Pilgrim apps for both; however, most of the reviews for these apps do not seem to be positive. Would like to hear about some other experiences using the Wise Pilgrim apps and suggestions/recommendations.
Gracias, Dominick

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!

I have both the Wise Pilgrim and Buen Camino apps. I use both, because neither is perfect, but rely more on the Buen Camino app, which is free.

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
Tomorrow makes 2 weeks that I arrived from my first CF. I used Ivar's free Camino Places app. It worked like a charm. Easy to click and see were you are on the camino. Always pulled it out when I'd come up to a fork in the road to verify that I was heading in the right direction. His app offers the Norte and Primitivo as well.

The Camino Places app is listed as “currently unavailable in your region”. Is it only accessible once you are in Spain?

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Yes, that maybe why I could not find it on the Ivar blog website. So, is it a matter of just accessing the website - once I am in Espana?
Thanks,

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
I was able to install the Places-app in Holland. So it doesn't just work in Spain. ???
By the way: the Camino Places app is a joint venture of the Camino Forum and Wise Pilgrim.

Hola Peregrinos,
Gracias, Dominick

Hi Dominick
Since 3 years I use OsmAnd. They show quite a lot of "Caminos" in Spain. You can download free 7maps. It's easy to use. Have a nice time.

It will say Camino Places right underneath the logo. I have an iPhone so not sure if it's available for Android.

Hola Anthony,
I also have an Android. From the website the was given during our messaging, I seemed to be able to download the Camino Places app, but only for the Camino Frances. So, not sure why this is. I will continue to work on it, and may eventually contact Ivar. Thanks for all your help.
Buen Camino,
Dominick

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I used Buen Camino and Camino Places, but only sparingly. The maps were not always 100% reliable, so I would prefer to use the waymarking to ensure I was on the 'way'. Camino Places mis-directed me on the way to Laredo, and Buen Camino was incorrect on a short section towards Muxia. I rarely used them though, so not sure how many other times they are incorrect.

Buen Camino was very popular on the way for accomodation though, so I think it may be very useful for seeing what albergues are open etc.

I use Buen Camino and Wisely apps when I feel like I might be off course because I haven't seen an arrow or other pilgrims in a while. They are also useful for navigating out of larger cities. Otherwise, it's easier to follow the arrows.

I have used the Wise pilgrim apps a few times and always found them good. I know sometimes ‘someone’ moves the camino arrows (maybe to ensure you pass their establishment!) or the routes get changed and the apps take a while to catch up. However, the track on the app is always going to get you to your destination.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Wise Pilgrim app for the CF was great and I used it a lot to check elevations, accommodations and special hints near problem areas. Very good for navigating through cities and downloadable maps were good. Yes the app is not always up to date on all Camino changes but the directions will not lead you astray.

I mostly used https://www.gronze.com/ and Google translated the Spanish to English for me. I used it for albergues (with recommendations) and for elevations. The web site gets regular updates and is possibly the most up-to-date source for albergues. However, because it primarily relies on user recommendations, occasionally, some newer albergues are not listed. I found that I didn't need directions along the trail.

I started out with Buen Camino, but after observing how other pilgrims benefited from using Wise Pilgrim, I purchased it and I was glad I did. I often checked both to make plans. Wise Pilgrim provided additional information.

Think you have to be in Europe. Easily solved (at least in the Apple app store) by setting up another account using an address in Spain. But I notice Camino Places only has the major routes.

5*s for Wise Pilgrim apps. Way better than anything else I found. Used on Camino Francés, Finisterre, VdlP. All worked brilliantly - particularly the online maps to show location. The VdlP app is quite new, so not as detailed as Frances (maybe the same for the Norte) but it’s possible to leave comments for other users and hopefully this will help to develop the apps further. And for <£5 you can’t complain. I also used Spanish version of ‘Gronze’ but only for more detailed info about accommodation.
