Where did you walk ( locally ) in 2016?

I've been working in Dublin (my home town) a lot lately, and enjoying little rambles down memory lane. This week's favourite was a stroll in the hills above the city. About 12kms, from Kilmashogue Wood to Fairy Castle, Three Rock Mountain and Ticknock.

I last did this walk more than 30 years ago. A lot has changed since then, but it's still a very pleasant little wander, with great views of the city.

My long weekly walk didn't happen today, torrential rain and became a 10 k walk around Sevenoaks and Knole Park. Still very enjoyable but I did get SOAKED

I'm getting very good at fitting in a walk when I travel for work. This week I'm in Sligo, in the west of Ireland and I enjoyed a walk up, down and around Knockarea. Up the hill to the tomb of the ancient Queen Maeve of Connacht, down the other side and along the country roads to get back to my car. A very pleasant 10kms or so.

Walking near Masham in Yorkshire we came across this Druids Temple an amazing folly of the 19th century. I called it "Lost in the Labyrinth"

We walked the ridges of a sunny Galician country side yesterday in Nidderdale North Yorkshire UK , well a chap can dream can't he?

Back in my backyard Onkaparinga River National Park. Venturing out onto steeper slopes and down into the gorge, building endurance as my foot gets stronger. The eucalypts are in bloom, swarms of bees amid the flowers, lots and lots of birds and big mobs of kangaroos. Sauntered along the Echidna (one of Australia's only 2 egg laying mammals) Trail though haven't seen one for a few years now. The photo is of a young chap we met in Tasmania.

 
Today we visited Richmond area Yorkshire he blossom on the last pic looks like snow or frost.

Less impressive nature than the pics of the last posters but still happy to be up and about for six k...( the starting point of this walk is three k from home and normally I would just add these extra six to my walk. But still easy going with the foot ).

Glorious 25 Celsius today after a week of torrental rain and storms .
Very divers walk : limestone area so on one pic you see a limetone where you are alllowed to carve your name .
And the local caves of course....Also a squared farm, very typical for this region.

Urban stroll in the city (Adelaide) this morning, post surgeon appointment, ruminating over my husband's upcoming shoulder reconstruction - at least he'll still be able to walk while he recovers. We wandered along the River Torrens and then back through the parklands under the stately towering Moreton Bay Fig trees that emanate such calm and deep inner strength. They also provide shelter to some of our city's homeless.

haha Famous Vaals. Some forummembers ( from the Netherlands and Germany ) and I planned to meet there....still a work in progress
 
Walked in Berg today but the circular walk was cut short because of the debris of a huge storm two weeks ago.
No pasaran at all...so back again.
But was good to finally be out again.
And with the flechas of our own local Camino the Via Limburgica.

Today I was a volunteer at a temporary Camino exhibition in the beautiful town ( the oldest of our country ) of Tongeren. Full of Roman heritage.

I was too early so I went for a city walk....guided by the markers M which stands for Milestone.

Another pic is one of the many ( also temporary ) Maria statues that the locals put on display because this week the Coronation processions are taking place. Every seven years the biggest procession of Belgium takes place in Tongeren. Out of 30000 inhabitants 3000 volunteers make this procession one of a kind!!

Third pic is ( oh coincidence ) of the " Spanish house ". Beautiful medieval artwork and now protected heritage.

In April Peg and I hiked for 5 days on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia around the 60 mile mark (of about 2,200). It was a lot of fun seeing the thru-hikers at week one of their trip (with about 26 weeks more to go.) We usually see those hikers who are still walking at about their 1,900th mile in the White Mountains of New Hampshire close to Mt. Washington (see the attached picture taken about two weeks ago.) On this hike we met a man traversing the trail from north to south. People normally go the other way so they can follow spring.

Two sets of photos. The first didn't involve much walking:-
round Stourhead gardens (National Trust) with its granary and lake with bridge.
Next day at the hawk Conservancy with @thehappyhermit (s) which again was more 'walking round' plus, when watching the displays, being ready to duck as the various birds flew over the audience.

Then today we finally walked somewhere different to our usual rounds. Becky Falls, on Dartmoor, is not far away and has several marked routes. We chose the red and purple. If you can walk that then the Camino need have no fears, including steep and rugged hills!
After lunch in the café we then completed the more gentle climb back to the entrance and car park. We loved the sign

9k. gentle walk at Platwijers, hour drive from home...lots of ponds and pools. Nice company too .And foot finally on the mend.

This morning I had a nice walk along the coast in Zeeland, in the south / west of Holland.
Great walking weather, it was about 18 celcius and no sun.
Was nice and quite so I could clear my head.

Still 26 Celsius and it is almost 7pm.
Too hot for my liking but at least no 35 like last week.
Ha typical Belgian...we only have two hot weeks a year and even then we complain...
Stroll around the village and inspecting the pear trees...and finding a locked gate.
And of course a Meseta like path...

Last weekend I walked 17km from Liscannor to Doolin along the edge (literally) of the Cliffs of Moher. Closest I've felt to 'something' since the day at Cruz de Fero 3 years ago.

Words can't describe this walk and because I don't take photos, forgive me for linking this site - it's the only way you'll get to see what I'm talking about.

Locally this year I have been walked parts of the Appalachian trail near Harper's Ferry. There are a lot of hikers passing through this area and I see them several times each week. It is a great trail through here and an enjoyable trail.

haha... folks around here say that we have the best baker in France New owners took over last year and everyone held their breath, wondering if it would ever be the same again... but thankfully it was business as usual... except they also do lots more cakes and pizza

In my backyard Onkaparinga Park again... only the winter rains have come and a few days ago we passed our 2015 rainfall total... a rare and welcome sight to see the creeks and rivers run and the tall and stately red gums get a welcome long drink...

There is a rock climbing cliff face with a newly installed staircase that provides great cardio training and a vantage point over the river to pause and recover:



We made our way down to the Onkaparinga River and followed it up to the township of Clarendon to find the ford a raging torrent and the weir overflowing - an occasional winter event that always makes the news here:

Walking the Trans Canada Trail on Burnaby Mountain near Vancouver today. Varied terrain passing the cedar sculpture "Kamui Mintara", through old growth cedar and pine forests with spectacular views over Burrard Inlet.

Hi all, I have two training routes here in Brighton UK. Mostly I'm up on the beautiful South Downs, but I often walk the coastal path from Hove to Rottingdean and back, 15km of beaches and a few steep bits along the cliff tops. Today I walked the coastal path...

While walking I came across this!


No idea what the yellow arrow means here, and I only saw the one, but I am happy knowing that I will be following them for real again in a few weeks! I will be walking the Camino Baztan to Pamplona, then Frances to Leon, then San Salvador and Primitivo to Santiago followed by Muxia and Finisterre.

16 k.today in Linter. Bit of everything. Cobblestone, meadow, countrylanes, asphalt, Great War remembrance and to end a cafe con leche. And Camino sign. Grey but dry weather.

Yesterday I did a nice walk on the Veluwe, in mid of Holland.
On the way back home I visited the " ereveld op de Grebbenberg"
Paid my respect to those who died in defending there country in 1940.

In 1974 I visited a friend in Northern Ireland and during that time I walked along the Giant Causeway.
That was fantastic.

It is good to see others walks and progress.
We walked up our big hill again today. Just past where it reaches the road there was the 'highest point' sign for the recent road race. Great view over the hedge. We had come up from the stream level where the row of trees is across the middle of the photo. Walking the runners route eventually brings us back to town where at the top of the final small hill was this other sign.
The arrows were orange, and distances were also sprayed on the road. We had walked up the hill and reached the road before the 3 mile marker then followed round to the end at 6 miles before returning home. About 7kms total walk.

Camino Way markers in Bronze
The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Today I decided to take the dog on a longer walk than usual and so I headed out to the Estabrook Woods area in Carlisle and Concord Massachusetts. Henry David Thoreau used to walk in this area and since I was walking a now overgrown dirt road I'm pretty sure my footsteps fell over his. The area must look a bit different now; it must be more wooded than in Thoreau's time. I started on Two Rod Road (the old width of the road; about 10 meters) but the road is just a footpath now. Peg doesn't care for this walk because there isn't much variety in the scenery (being mainly woods) and the trail is flat and straight for the most part.

Snake along the way (on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia this spring a timber rattlesnake was stretched across the trail but I didn't get any pictures because I was busy holding back the dog):


My turn-around point was this pond (not Walden Pond):


This shows how beaver damage is minimized. A wire fence is placed around the pond outlet and a pipe leading into the pond exits on the outlet side. You can see the beaver have placed their dam on the pond side of the fence:

I circled the pond on my way back. There were two more ponds, each a bit higher than the other. The topmost was pretty dry as you can see in these pictures. You can get a better look at a beaver control setup:
