Weather on the Meseta

Time of past OR future Camino
Frances (2014)
I have been walking the Camino Frances in two week chunks. I walked Roncevalles to Logrono in 2015, Logrono to Burgos in 2014, and skipped ahead to walk Sarria to Santiago in 2015 arriving at the Cathedral for my 70th birthday.

I am ready to return and fill in the gaps. So, what time of year might, MIGHT!, have better weather on the Meseta starting from Burgos?

Thank you.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I think mid to late May gives you a fair chance of fair to good weather Caminomary.

It's weather so can't be sure, however, it seems historically to be a nice time be walking over that area.

Buen (fair-weather) Camino

The meseta is beautiful in the spring. The brief but intense flowering before the dry heat of summer can be astonishing to behold as mother nature reclaims to her glory every inch that she can. Timing is everything as that cold desert elides into the heat of summer but catch it if you can. I watched a hundred eagles migrating north one perfect morning. That was in late April in 2012. Climate is everything but weather is what you get. Walk as close to or a little after Beltane as you are able, and buen camino.

I spent the month of March 2017 in Moratinos. There were chilly mornings and sunny afternoons, there was spotty rain and a few short hail storms. The number of pilgrims was minimal. At the end of March I took a train to Burgos and walked back to Sahagun, it was mainly a walk in a t-shirt.

An alternative view is to walk it in Autumn. We did so in late September early October 2017 and the weather was fine with bright blue skies and orange and brown colours predominant. The only disappointment for us which could factor into your thinking, was missing the sunflowers in blossom. The Meseta section was nevertheless one of the highlights of our Camino.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
I like to walk this stretch in May. The flowers are in bloom and the agricultural crops are growing and green. The temperatures are mild once the sun comes up, though it can still be in single digits early in the morning. Layered clothing is advisable.

In my experience, the only "fly in the ointment" is rain. It does rain on the Meseta, especially in the Spring. As long as the winds are gentle, you should have no problems.

I hope this helps.

Gentle weather, short rainy days. When I told some countrymen to prepare for Galicia as it was sure to rain there, they did not believe me.
So enjoy the flat pan of the Mezeta, it is beautiful in May
and the sky is endless....

We are currently walking it now. Started in St Jean last Thursday in Oct and reached Burgos on 6th November.

Since Burgos the weather has been much colder but still walkable and no rain.

In total we've had just one significant downpour. Before Burgos.

The scenery is utterly beautiful and full of wonderful autumnal colours. This morning it started off a bit misty but cleared by 10.30.

For me the temperature is perfect for walking. Not too hot and, after a fresh start in the morning, it's comfortably warm.

Accomodation is good provided you are prepared to use albergues AND hotels. Sometimes it requires a bit of planning.

For me, although we didn't have a choice of when to walk it, I think we are walking it at the best time.

I'am a spring walker , it's not to hot and everything is so green .
About the weather, that will go it's one course.
Wish you well and a Buen Camino,Peter.

Assuming this post has resurfaced because someone other than the OP is interested in answers. If this is the case then IMO it is the luck of the draw. One spring I walked into incredibly bitter winds with icy rain that lasted all of one day and was completely miserable. One autumn I got spectacular tail winds and thoroughly enjoyed watching pilgrims wearing capes blowing past me like galleons with full sails. And then was another autumn day of solid rain when the mud rose higher and higher under everyone’s shoes until it was like walking on stilts. The bigger the tread, the thicker the mud. Do I regret walking on any of those days? Not for a minute because they make for great shared experiences and great memories.
