In a few days we fly to Dallas for a graduation then on to Pamplona. We decided to go light and not use a check bag. We plan to buy a few things when we arrive, like walking poles and a Swiss army knife for opening wine bottles and cutting bread, etc.. My awesome wife and I are chronic over packers so, this is a real challenge for us to go for 5 weeks in two 34 liter packs.

We actually walk out of SJPDP on the 30th. We are staying there a couple of days to deal with jet-lag.

About 1.5 years ago I ruptured my right quadriceps tendon. It was a major surgery to put my leg back together. I'm slightly worried about that but, on weekends we have been walking 8 - 16 miles to train. I think it's fine. Last weekend we walked 8 miles with fully loaded packs and water. This weekend we'll walk with the final pack load for an all day thing and see how it goes. I don't anticipate any issues.

It's been a few years since I traveled to Europe. As I recall it wasn't difficult. The rule of thumb for me in airports is stop and read the signs..or ask someone. Also, I remember that in trips past there were things I packed that I didn't need. This trip we have to be more critical of stuff.

Lots of my friends wonder why in the world we would want to walk 500 miles across Spain. I've discovered that no answer solves their curiosity. I had originally planned to get euros before we left but, we decided that we would just ATM some at the airport in Spain.

There's a certain vulnerability in not over planning. I need that I think. After my first wife's years of illnesses and ultimate death (lot's of suffering) I have trust issues with God. Before I die I need to work on that.

We are planning to leave SJPdP on May 30 as well!!! I'm looking forward to meeting you. Are you going straight through to Roncevalles? We are staying at Orisson.

@falconbrother, my husband tore three of the 4 quad tendons loose from his knee and the fourth was hanging on only by a partial connection. it was repaired in 2018 and he's walked several Caminos since then and walks a lot each day at home. Best wishes on your pilgrimage.
