Edith Wharton, the American novelist who almost recieved the Nobel Prize, three times, has a marvelous book "A Motor Flight Through France". She visited Vezelay and descibes wonderfully the church, the village, and the situation. Unlike far too many modern pilgrims she knew to also visit Auxerre, Avallon, and right down and around the hill Saint Pere. Her descriptions are marvelous. She also includes Nevers, Bourges, and a remarkably accurate description of my favorite, Neuvy-Saint-Sépulchre - both village and church. What remarkable why marvelous? The book records her visit in 1908! Nothing much seems to have changed!! The book is not required reading before setting out on the Via Lemovicensis but seek it out upon your return. Not found in many libraries these days but easily and very inexpensive here:
