Vezelay route July 2016

Hello Pilgrims! My mother, daughter and myself have chosen to walk the Vezelay route this coming summer. We have done as much research as we are able, but there isn't much to be found outside this forum honestly. My mother has walked from Pamplona previously, and my daughter (11) and myself are going for the first time. We are prepared for a more remote walk, with less infrastructure, but as we have an 11 y/o with us, we suspect that our daily distance will likely be less than a grown adult could do in a day (who knows, she could put us all to shame! lol) We chose this route for historical significance, but also with the understanding that it is fairly flat for much of the route. We are thinking that that will be an easier introduction to a very long walk than beginning on an incline.

We are looking specifically for information about lodging, distance between lodging/food, types of terrain, way markers (or lack thereof), ease of following the trail, and any other thing that someone with recent experience on the Vezelay route feels is pertinent and helpful. I understand that there is new infrastructure happening all the time.

There is a Miam Miam Dodo for the Vezelay. Good maps and info about lodgings. In French, but mainly symbols, so easy for non-French speakers to interpret. Try bookfinder.com to find a copy, but check title carefully, as many sites don't make clear year of publication and route.

Hello KDC,

As already stated above, start with ordering the Miam-miam-dodo book.
After, take into account that the voice de Vézelay is a low frequentation route: the accommodations are not always available, you will have to plan your stages 2-3 days in advance, to be sure to have a bed.
Another point will be the food: you will have stages without bar/restaurant/store. From my experience, the best is to talk a lot with the local people: there are helpful and informed (but they think "car", so don't trust their time estimation...).

Hi KDC,

Around January 15 (2016) two new english guidebooks for the Vezelay route will be published by the Dutch Association of Saint James: one for the variant via Bourges and one for the variant via Nevers. The guidebooks include: directions, detailed maps (in color) and accommodations. By that time you will find more information on the website of the Association > www.santiago.nl. (The website is in Dutch, but is including an english section > click on the English flag on the home page).

Hi KDC,I have a 2016 Miam Miam Dodo guide for the Vezelay route that I ordered by accident (I'm an idiot), that includes the Bourges, Nevers and Bergerac variants. You can have it if you pay postage. (I'm actually walking Geneva-Le Puy-S. Jean-Finisterre again in 2016)

I m on Vezelay route. Its very easy way,flat,well marked, but very solitary,walking alone and see very few peleri on this way. Im using miam miam Dodo for gite reservation and routes and for me its good. Today im in Saint-Fauste(La Tripterie)slept in a nice mobil home gite and i will go to Chateauroux

I had a night there in 2007: the mobil home was already there and I had a very nice evening talking to the host.
I think I had not meet more than 10 pilgrims from Vézelay to St-Jean-Pied-de-Port...

After Argenton sur Creuse, I highly recommend the gite at Le Pechereau! Take food. You will pass a large supermarket a kilometer before it.
